The crystallization of my twenties

The flash of flame speaks louder than words. The speed, rhythm, and red color of the flame blown from Alex's (Denis Lavant) mouth precede everything else. First came the words, no, first came the image, no, first came the emotion. "The Lovers on the Bridge" (1991) is a film like a convergence of sensations. Michelle (Juliette Binoche) is captivated by the unknown intensity of the flash of flame. At this moment, the flame becomes Alex's new "language." However, Alex's flame damages Michelle's eyes, which are on the verge of going blind. The unexpected joy and irreparable damage are carved out by the speed of Alex's blows, his refined acrobatics, and the rhythm of the editing. The light of the flame illuminates Michelle. The intensity of the light captivates her heart and eyes. Everything moves toward the luminous point. There is a sense of a "clash" here, as if speeds collide.

This scene, symbolizing the film's theme, foreshadows the plot in which Alex burns Michelle's posters plastered all over town. The sense of being torn in half is reminiscent of the bow movement in Zoltan Kodaly's Cello Sonata. Leos Carax was attempting to conclude the adventure of his "Alex Trilogy," which began with " Boy Meets Girl " (1984). Disaster began with Denis Lavant's hand injury. Filming took three years, with two interruptions. The sheer scale of the project involved recreating the Pont Neuf Bridge on a set. The set collapsed due to bad weather. Funding shortages followed one after another. The fact that Juliette Binoche, a national French actress, devoted three years to a single film (she turned down work with Elia Kazan in order to focus on filming this film). When Leos Carax, Denis Lavant, and Juliette Binoche talk about this film, they all always say the same thing: "A life lived." There is nothing better. It was worth risking your life for. A young Leos Carax once said, "A film must be made before it's too late." This film was made in time for the speed of youth. Even today, The Lovers on the Bridge remains the crystallization of youth, the crystallization of a formidable spirit.
