"Writing with Light"

The cinematographer was Vittorio Storaro. He met Bertolucci on `` The Eve of the Revolution '' (1964) and joined him as the cinematographer from `` Opera Assassination '' (1970). At the time of making The Conformist, he was only 30 years old. He went on to win three Academy Awards for Best Cinematography for Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now (1979), Warren Beatty's Reds (1981), and Bernardo Bertolucci's The Last Emperor (1987). He became a master of masters, earning respect from cinematographers.

Storaro will be working with Greg Toland, who worked on `` Wuthering Heights '' (39) and `` Citizen Kane ' ' (41), and G.R. He was in awe of the work of such legends, and studied their work to establish his own style. But even more than that, Storaro used paintings and architecture as a source of inspiration for his work. When preparing for ``The Conformist,'' he expanded his imagination by studying surrealist paintings by Giorgio de Chirico and René Magritte, and reading books on modernist architecture.

Among them, the person who had a great influence on his style was Caravaggio, the founder of Italian Baroque painting. His works, which create strong contrasts by clearly contrasting light and dark, are truly an art of light and shadow. Storaro famously said, "Writing with Light," which is exactly what Caravaggio wrote. If Vermeer, who also cites his name as an influence, is a painter who ``envelops himself in light,'' Caravaggio is a painter who ``separates light and shadow.''

In later years, Storaro served as the director of photography for the biographical film `` Caravaggio: The Light and Shadow of a Genius Painter '' (2007), which depicts Caravaggio's life. For him, who has pursued the creation of paintings similar to Caravaggio's paintings, it must have been his desire to create a work depicting himself.
