A close friend pretends to congratulate her friend on her wedding, but in reality he is secretly plotting to sabotage it. My My Best Friend's Wedding(1997) is a humorous depiction of a best friend's wedding and the plan to sabotage it. It was Julia Roberts' long-awaited return to the classic romantic comedy genre, after she rose to stardom with Pretty Woman (1990). The film was directed by Australian director P.J. Hogan, who gained attention for his work on Muriel Getting Married (1994) starring Toni Collette. The screenplay was written by veteran director Ronald Bass, who has worked on Rain Man (Barry Levinson, 1988) and The Joy Luck Club (Wayne Wang, 1993).

After spending a summer romance in college, Julianne (Julia Roberts) and Michael (Dermot Mulroney) have been best friends for many years. They have traveled together many times and are always there when the other is in trouble. Of course, they also give love advice. Shocked, Julian hurries off from New York to Chicago where the wedding is to take place.
