"My Best Friend's Wedding" Synopsis

Julian, a food critic, had promised his college sweetheart Michael, who became his best friend after they broke up, that if he was still single by the time he turned 28, they would get married. Then, as his 28th birthday was fast approaching, Julian received a call from Michael. However, contrary to his expectations, the call said, "I'm getting married this coming Sunday, and I want you to come." Julian hurriedly rushed to prepare for the wedding, where he met Michael's fiancée, 20-year-old Kim. Still full of regrets, Julian decided to sabotage the wedding...

A close friend pretends to congratulate her friend on her wedding, but in reality he is secretly plotting to sabotage it. My My Best Friend's Wedding(1997) is a humorous depiction of a best friend's wedding and the plan to sabotage it. It was Julia Roberts' long-awaited return to the classic romantic comedy genre, after she rose to stardom with Pretty Woman (1990). The film was directed by Australian director P.J. Hogan, who gained attention for his work on Muriel Getting Married (1994) starring Toni Collette. The screenplay was written by veteran director Ronald Bass, who has worked on Rain Man (Barry Levinson, 1988) and The Joy Luck Club (Wayne Wang, 1993).

After spending a summer romance in college, Julianne (Julia Roberts) and Michael (Dermot Mulroney) have been best friends for many years. They have traveled together many times and are always there when the other is in trouble. Of course, they also give love advice. Six years ago, they made a promise to get married if they were both single at 28. However, one day, just before turning 28, Michael decided to marry someone he had just met.


Shocked, Julian hurries off from New York to Chicago where the wedding is to take place. Sports writer Michael has chosen to marry college student Kimberly, nicknamed Kim (Cameron Diaz), whose father owns a baseball team and a TV station. Julian finally realizes his true feelings. In reality, he has loved Michael all this time. He had only been hiding this by calling him his best friend. Asked to be a bridesmaid, Julian decides to use her position to ruin the wedding. Thus begins her plan to get her ex-boyfriend back.
