Scott is entrusted with the helm of the second series.

Following the worldwide success of the first film when it was released in 1984, producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer began working on a franchise, as is standard practice in Hollywood business.

Initially, there was talk of turning it into a TV series, but this idea was later rejected as it had to be a feature film. Next, a plot like "Detective Axel Foley Goes to Europe" was planned, set in Paris and London, but this was again rejected as Eddie Murphy himself wanted to film in the United States. As a result, the familiar story of featuring two cities (Detroit and Beverly Hills) was solidified.

However, there is one important change. This is that the director, Martin Brest, who launched the series, will not be reprising his role in the previous film. This means that a new talent must be found to take on this role. Who could bring out even more flavor than the previous film, without compromising the flavor of the material, and skillfully lead the production team? The answer was right in front of Don and Jerry. It was around the time that filming of " Top Gun " (1986) was drawing to a close. The production duo approached director Tony Scott, who had energetically brought together the cast and staff of this innovative fighter jet movie, and asked him if he would give it a try.

Scott himself was apparently very hesitant about the offer. It was a sequel to a blockbuster that someone else had set the stage for, and he himself had zero experience in comedy films. He also wasn't confident that he could handle a big star like Eddie Murphy.

However, when you see the finished film, you are surprised at how the scale, power, speed, and twists that are typical of Tony Scott are densely established, as if these worries were a lie. The reason for its success is probably that he did not blindly jump into an unknown world, but rather skillfully drew these subjects into his own field and cooked them up. In other words, the previous film, which was based on comedy, has undergone a new transformation into a "comedy action" film based on Tony's style of action, as demonstrated in " Top Gun ."
