In action movies, to what extent should actors themselves attempt dangerous stunts?
For example, Tom Cruise has made it his selling point to challenge himself to do dangerous things, even for a stuntman, such as climbing to the top of the Burj Khalifa (828m high!) in Dubai and clinging to a plane as it takes off. Keanu Reeves also brilliantly performs the gun-shooting and kung-fu that has been dubbed "gun fu" in his role as an assassin in " John Wick ." Furthermore, Jackie Chan continues to impose physical action on himself almost as if it were his mission.
They are already in their 50s and 60s. They know how to "cheat" well and are good at "making it look like they're doing it themselves." However, for people who are used to watching movies, it's pretty obvious at a glance which parts are the real thing and which are the stunt doubles. With today's VFX, it's even possible to naturally replace just the face, and I remember being stunned when I saw a stunt scene of a certain action star before it was replaced.
Young stars who do not have the "show" techniques of Tom Cruise or Jackie Chan are tested on their physical abilities. Tom Holland in "Spiderman: Homecoming" is only 21 years old (at the time of the movie's release). Of course, he does not have any tricky techniques. However, it is clear from watching the finished footage that his physical abilities are extraordinary.
