Summary of "A Normal Family"

The elder brother Jae-wan (Seol Kyung-gu) is a lawyer who has always prioritized material gain over morality. He is not afraid to even defend murderers if it means getting a job. He lives in a luxury apartment with his younger second wife Ji-soo (Claudia Kim) and their teenage daughters, and has a life that everyone envies, with a housekeeper doing all the housework. Meanwhile, Jae-gyu (Jang Dong-gun), who works as a pediatrician, has always lived by the belief that he must be moral and conscientious. He lives with his older wife Yeon-kyung (Kim Hee-ae) and their teenage son, and he devotes himself to caring for his mother, who is elderly and suffering from dementia, and lives a life of good behavior. The brothers have lived by completely incompatible beliefs. However, the two brothers gather once a month with their respective wives for dinner in a private room at a high-class restaurant. At the restaurant, Jae-wan and his wife, who are regular customers, always take priority, and conversations between the brothers' families are somewhat awkward. On the night of the dinner, an incident occurs, bringing about a shocking conclusion that this family living a contented life could never have imagined.

A shocking work from the master of "Christmas in August"

In Korea, " Shiri " became such a big hit that it was called a social phenomenon in 1999. The year before, " Christmas in August " (1998), also starring Han Suk-kyu, was released, and the heartfelt love story between the protagonist, who runs a photo studio, and the young heroine moved audiences to tears.

Nearly a quarter century has passed since the birth of " Christmas in August ," which could be said to be the forerunner of the new wave of Korean cinema, and director Heo Jin-ho, whose feature film debut was this one, is now over 60 years old. This master director, who recently made headlines for his first drama series, presents his latest work, "A Normal Family" (24), a human suspense story that addresses modern society with a sharp perspective and narrative style.

To be honest, I was excited but also anxious. His early work left such a strong impression on me that I had a preconceived notion that he couldn't make anything cutting-edge. But that notion was completely shattered by the shocking opening sequence.

The film is about a murder committed by the heir of a large corporation in a luxury car. Just when you think this prologue is being shown in a series of vivid images, the story begins in earnest and switches to a completely different "family story."
