Synopsis of "I Memory"

Sylvia works as a social worker and lives in New York with her 13-year-old daughter. Saul has memory loss due to early-onset dementia. The two, who had no prior contact, meet at a high school reunion. Sylvia begins looking after Saul at the request of his family, but she is drawn to him as she comes into contact with his gentle, kind personality and the sadness of a fate that he cannot resist. However, she too is hiding the scars of her past.

A Mexican talent takes on new horizons in New York

Just like the other distinguished Mexican pioneers such as Iñárritu, del Toro, and Cuarón, who are now in their 60s, the films made by Michel Franco, a talented Mexican-born director in his 40s, are by no means straightforward.

It is difficult to describe his style in one word, and all his works are peculiar and often leave a bad aftertaste. At the very least, it is certain that his films are the type that are not for everyone. Nevertheless, I still look forward to his works because, while they make the audience swallow a sticky sediment, they also offer a startling glimpse into the psychology and depth of human beings.

If you approach his latest film, "I Memory" (23), knowing his work beforehand, you will be impressed by the human relationships that are revealed with his usual excellent writing. At the same time, a slightly different side to usual stands out. That is because Franco's work this time is sometimes soft and warm. It is by no means a powerful or divine light, but there is a faint ray of salvation that seems to lead you from the darkness of life to another place.

This is a work that could be called a new frontier, reached by this rare artist through organic collaboration with Hollywood's most talented actors (Jessica Chastain and Peter Sarsgaard).
