The Catholic Church is the largest Christian denomination with over 1.4 billion followers worldwide. The Pope, its supreme leader and head of state, dies in Vatican City, its headquarters. Over 100 candidates from around the world immediately gather for the conclave, a Conclave to determine the new pope. Secret voting begins behind closed doors in the Sistine Chapel. However, Cardinal Lawrence, who is tasked with presiding over the election, finds himself faced with a number of scandals surrounding the candidates.

Differences from previous conclave-related works

When it comes to films about the Conclave, or conclave, several come to mind. First, there's " The Two Popes " (2019), which focuses on the dialogue between Pope Benedict XVI, who was Pope at the time in 2012, and Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, who would succeed him the following year. Jonathan Pryce, who played Cardinal Bergoglio, was nominated for Best Actor at the 92nd Academy Awards, and Anthony Hopkins, who played Pope Benedict XVI, was also nominated for Best Supporting Actor. Also, in the sequel to the popular series, " Angels & Demons " (2009), Tom Hanks's Professor Robert Langdon investigates the connection between the kidnapping of cardinals following the death of the Pope and a secret society. There was also " Pope's Holiday " (2011), in which the protagonist, unable to bear the pressure of being elected as the new pope by a conclave, flees to Rome.

The conclave is merely the starting point for the story, and the film does not depict the election itself. This is what the film "The Conclave" focuses on. The story begins with the original novel by best-selling author Robert Harris.

Harris began his career as a non-fiction writer, eventually publishing several fact-based entertainment novels. Perhaps his most famous work is " The Ghost Writer ." It is a high-quality political suspense novel in which Harris's deep disappointment with then-friend British Prime Minister Tony Blair's involvement in the Iraq War is transformed. The film adaptation, directed by Roman Polanski, is an unforgettable work, especially when combined with the bleak landscape of the isolated island where it is set.
