In 2025, Mission: Impossible- Final Reckoning was finally released in Japan. It's the culmination of the Mission: Impossible series (since 1996), which has become synonymous with spy movies, and the latest work from Tom Cruise, who has become a master stuntman. In this series, Tom Cruise jumps and falls from heights like cliffs, skyscrapers, airplanes, helicopters, and more! And in this film, he pulls off an action scene no one has ever seen before: fighting a flying propeller plane.
However, while watching this incredible stunt, some people may have thought something like this: "It's certainly impressive, but perhaps I'm not worried and anxious about the fictional character Ethan Hunt, but about the real-life actor Tom Cruise."

Ethan Hunt and Tom Cruise. The line between these two characters is now extremely thin. In a way, it's like Rocky and Stallone in " Rocky " (1976), or Takeshi Hongo and Hiroshi Fujioka in " Kamen Rider " (1971). And it's not surprising that it turned out this way.
You could say that the "Mission: 3D" series represents Tom Cruise's entire acting career. Of course, he was already a big star when he starred in the first film. However, "Mission: 3D" was the first time he served as a producer, and he has always participated as a producer in the series since. Tom Cruise is both the leading actor in the film's frontline and the producer behind the scenes. Although it is a super A-list Hollywood action blockbuster, this series is more intensely imbued with Tom Cruise's personal beliefs, aesthetics, and ideas than any art film that follows.
This time, I would like to trace the history of the series and discuss how the line between Tom Cruise and Ethan Hunt has become blurred, and what has happened as a result of this phenomenon.
