Have you heard of the legendary girl band, "The Paran Maum"? Three girls from the light music club at Shibasaki High School in a provincial city - guitarist Megumi Tachibana, bassist Nozomi Shirakawa, and drummer Kyoko Yamada - ended up recruiting Song, a Korean exchange student with limited Japanese, as their vocalist. They only ever performed on stage once, on the final day of the 2004 Shibasaki High School cultural festival, the Hiragi Festival.

But the true identity of "The Paran Maum " is the band featured in the film "Linda Linda Linda," which premiered in the summer of 2005. They are a cover band of The Blue Hearts . Parlan Maum means "blue hearts" in Korean. Though the setting is fictional, they enjoy the same popularity as a real band. Above all, the cast is truly impressive. First of all, the role of the vocalist, Song, a foreign student, is played by Bae Doona (born 1979). Director Nobuhiro Yamashita (born 1976), who was 28 at the time and had fallen head over heels for her after seeing Bong Joon-ho's " Barking Dogs Never Bite " (2000), pushed her hard, and apparently the role of the foreign student was not originally intended. The role of guitarist Tachibana Megumi is played by Kashii Yu (born 1987), who had just made her film debut. She is the youngest member of the band in the film, and won the Best New Actress award at the 29th Yamaji Fumiko Film Awards for her performance in this film. The role of drummer Yamada Kyoko will be played by child actress Maeda Aki (born 1985), and the role of bassist Shirakawa Nozomi will be played by Sekine Shiori (born 1985) of the rock band Base Ball Bear , who had yet to make their major debut.

The balance between these four characters is truly wonderful. Each stands out as a distinct individual, yet when they're all together, they blend together softly, creating a mysterious sense of unity. Incidentally, the film was mainly set in Takasaki and Maebashi cities in Gunma Prefecture. Maebashi Technical High School was used for filming Shibasaki High School. A rising star, Matsuyama Kenichi, and Katsuya Kobayashi, who currently works primarily as a producer and director, leave strong impressions as male students, while singer-songwriter Shion Yukawa and Yuko Yamazaki of rock band ME-ISM also take to the stage at the school festival. Another neat touch is the appearance of Masahiro Komoto, the younger brother of Hiroto Komoto, frontman of The Blue Hearts, as a teacher.

Now, 20 years after its release, this masterpiece, "Linda Linda Linda," will be revived in a 4K digitally remastered version on Friday, August 22, 2025. The phrase used in the promotional copy for this film, "A monumental coming-of-age film of the 2000s," is no exaggeration. Not only does it have a timeless, fresh brilliance that preserves a miraculous time, but it also has an incredible influence on future generations as a 21st-century standard that "invented" a formula. It's no exaggeration to say that Japanese coming-of-age films, or rather, the form of "stories" surrounding the landscape of youth, has changed dramatically before and after "Linda Linda Linda."
