67 A24 Recommended Movies! 2016-2017

10. “Swiss Army Man” (16) Director: Daniel Kwan, Daniel Scheinert 97 minutes

(c)2016 Ironworks Productions, LLC.

This is A24's first work to be distributed worldwide. The story has a rather outrageous setting in which a man who has been shipwrecked tries to survive by using a ``convenient corpse'' that washes up on the shore. A24's colors can be seen in the selection of this film as the first work to be distributed worldwide.

Paul Dano from ``Little Miss Sunshine'' (2006) played the role of a shipwrecked person, and Daniel Radcliffe from the ``Harry Potter'' series played the role of a corpse, overturning his previous image. The humor and certain "tricks" used in the play are excellent.

11. “Lost Emotion” (16) Director: Drake Doremus 101 minutes

An emotional near-future science fiction love romance that was also filmed in Japan. The fate of a man and a woman who had a fateful encounter at a facility where people whose emotions were artificially removed in order to eliminate conflict.

Nicholas Hoult of ``Mad Max: Fury Road'' (2015) and Kristen Stewart of the ``Twilight'' series delicately express the changes between a man and a woman as they develop feelings of love and gain humanity. Ridley Scott served as executive producer. Also, many of Tadao Ando's buildings appear in the play.

12. "Moonlight" (16) Director: Barry Jenkins 115 minutes

(C)2016 A24 Distribution, LLC

A memorable work that was produced by A24 for the first time. Members of Brad Pitt's Plan B Entertainment have been named as producers. It depicts the growth of a black boy living in a poverty-stricken area, dividing it into three stages: ``boyhood,'' ``adolescence,'' and ``adulthood.'' It is an area that has not received much attention so far as ``LGBTQ genre with a black protagonist.'' is challenging.

This is a human drama filled with elements that will tug at the heartstrings of viewers, such as the poetic visual expressions by up-and-coming director Barry Jenkins, neon colors, and an extremely pure love story. At the 89th Academy Awards Ceremony, the mistaken announcement incident of the century with "La La Land" (16) occurred.

13. “20th Century Woman” (16) Director: Mike Mills 119 minutes

(c) 2016 MODERN PEOPLE, LLC. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.

Director Mike Mills, who modeled his own father on ``Beginners'' (2010), writes this heartwarming masterpiece about his gratitude to his mother.

Four-time Oscar nominee Annette Bening, Greta Gerwig, who is rapidly growing as a director, and Elle Fanning vividly play the three generations of women surrounding the boy protagonist.

Director Mills's style, which connects snapshots and documentary photographs in a slide format, shows his extraordinary taste in everything from the furniture (which is said to have actually been used in the Mills family) to the music. The exhilarating last scene will leave a deep impression.

14. “A GHOST STORY” (17) Director: David Lowery 92 minutes

(c)2017 Scared Sheetless, LLC. All Rights Reserved

A husband loses his life in an accident and continues to watch over his wife afterward. A beautiful, tranquil and heartbreaking love story. Casey Affleck, who won an Oscar for ``Manchester by the Sea'' (2016), plays the role of a ephemeral ghost covered in a sheet.

Rooney Mara, who starred in ``The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo'' (11), played the role of his wife. She gives a raw yet sad performance, expressing her sadness over the loss of her husband by continuing to eat until she vomits.

The structure of the story, in which the protagonist loses touch with the concept of time and becomes a ghost as he watches over his wife, travels back and forth between the past and the future, is also profound.

15. “Good Time” (17) Director: Joshua Safdie, Benny Safdie 101 minutes

A crime drama that harshly depicts the fate of an older brother who robbed a bank with his younger brother, who has an intellectual disability, and how his fate deteriorates. Robert Pattinson, who has played many good-looking roles in films such as ``Twilight'' and ``Harry Potter,'' realistically played the role of a bottomless man whose actions backfire.

Rather than following a set plot carefully, the haphazard actions with a real-time feel are vivid and create a rare sense of realism.

The Safdie brothers, who worked on this film, teamed up again with A24 for "Uncut Diamond" (19). Here, the frustration of a cornered jeweler is brought to light.

16. “The Florida Project” (17) Director: Sean Baker 115 minutes

(C)2017 Florida Project 2016, LLC.

Directed by Sean Baker, who gained attention with ``Tangerine'' (2015), which was shot entirely on an iPhone, this masterpiece depicts the daily lives of the poor living in a cheap motel near Disney World in Florida, USA.

A 6-year-old girl lives with her mother, who doesn't have a regular job and manages to make ends meet. Through her gaze, the contrast between the warm bond she has with the caretaker and the relentlessly approaching reality of poverty is depicted in brutally colorful ways. The final scene, which foreshadows Ichijo's "hope", brings tears to my eyes.

17. “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” (17) Director: Yorgos Lanthimos 121 minutes

The Lobster director Yorgos Lanthimos and Colin Farrell reunite for this gruesome thriller. The story depicts the ``passion'' of a doctor, whose family faces horrifying experiences due to his involvement with a mysterious young man, in a mythical style.

From the beginning to the end, there's a scene where the camera continues to watch a person walking down a long hallway as it moves backwards, and a scene where it stares inorganically at a person falling from the top of an escalator, all of which have a "nasty" feel to them, as if they were someone else's problem. The camera work is outstanding. The fundamental fear of not knowing what is going on will grip your heart.

18. “Lady Bird” (17) Director: Greta Gerwig 95 minutes

(c)2017 InterActiveCorp Films, LLC.Merie Wallace, courtesy of A24

Directed by Greta Gerwig, the film brings together a talented young cast including Saoirse Ronan, Timothée Chalamet from ``Call Me by Your Name'' (2017), and Lucas Hedges from ``Manchester by the Sea''. Youth drama.

The story of a high school girl who is tired of living in the countryside and struggles to maintain her true identity while clashing with her mother is depicted in a gentle touch that is a mixture of compassion, melancholy, and longing for home. It received rave reviews from all quarters, and broke a new record for the highest score on the American review site Rotten Tomatoes.

(c) The Bureau Film Company Limited, Channel Four Television Corporation and The British Film Institute 2017

Director Andrew Haigh, who directed ``Ripples'' (2015), is a road movie that takes a gentle but harsh look at a boy who is alone for the rest of his life and the wanderings of a racehorse waiting to be disposed of.

The film depicts a 15-year-old boy who lost his father walking aimlessly through the wilderness with his horse, along with beautiful images that effectively use darkness and dusk. "Poverty" is one of the themes, and the main character faces a test of how long he can maintain his innocence even at rock bottom.

Starring Charlie Plummer, who carefully expressed the turbulent emotions of adolescence, won the Marcello Mastroianni Award (Best New Actor) at the 74th Venice International Film Festival.

A sacred and profound human drama directed and produced by Paul Schrader, screenwriter of ``Taxi Driver'' (1976). A pastor played by Ethan Hawke comes into contact with the ideology of eco-terrorists and begins to wonder about who he should be.

Religious symbols such as crosses and thorns are sprinkled throughout, and as the main character's regret as a father who lost his son and his mission as a priest become intertwined, we are made to reconsider ``what is salvation?'' .

Hawke's restrained acting received critical acclaim from all quarters, and he won the Best Actor Award at the 34th Independent Spirit Awards, an award for independent films.

21. “How to Talk to Girls at Parties” (17) Director: John Cameron Mitchell 103 minutes

(c) COLONY FILMS LIMITED 2016

Elle Fanning plays the role of an alien girl, surprising the "humans" with her aloof demeanor, and also showing off her innocent smile, all in a completely different light to the main character. It embodies the theme that ``the opposite sex is like an alien.''
