Q: I also felt that the "room" was very effective in depicting people. The scene where Kinu comes to Mugi's room and says "It's almost like my bookshelf" is also memorable, and since they started living together, many dramas have happened in the house. The audience can get deeply involved because their hobbies and lifestyles are thoroughly woven into the space itself.


Doi: As you said, we paid particular attention to the details, including the art. Each book and the way they are arranged... It's rare to see a story filled with so many proper nouns, and it was a work that really couldn't afford to overlook the details. In order to realistically portray the people who lived from 2015 to 2020, each staff member worked thoroughly and without cutting corners.


The script specifically described the apartment where the two live as being "a room with a view of the Tama River, a 30-minute walk from Chofu Station," so in the preparation stage of the film, we first looked for a location for it. However, it was actually quite difficult, so the balcony area and the interior were shot separately.

Q: I see!


Doi: For the balcony portion, we built a set on the roof of a building overlooking the Tama River, and shot the location. For the interior, we built a set inside the studio. For the interior design, we placed importance on realism, but also wanted the viewer to think, "Oh, that's nice. I'd like to live there," so we chose to shoot on a set, which gives us a lot of freedom.


Q: I would like to hear more about the "story full of proper nouns" mentioned earlier. There is fun in discovering movie titles such as " Venus in Fur " (13), " Beyond Hope " (17), and " A Brighter Summer Day " (91) in the play. In "Beyond Hope," I was thrilled to see the Eurospace in Shibuya.


Doi: In the scene where they use movie ticket stubs as bookmarks, it was specified that "Wheat is from 'Venus in Fur'" and "Silk is from 'Jiyugaoka ' (14)." Not just this part, but basically anything that can be clearly recognized in the movie is specified at the script stage*.
