The taste of whiskey I drank in Korea

Q: Do you not usually drink together with your staff?

Nishikawa: No, no, I do drink. However, when we're filming at a training camp in a rural area, the staff tend to leave the director alone, thinking that the director has something on his mind. It would be bad for the director to come in and make the young staff feel uncomfortable when they're having a good time. Unless the director invites you, it's hard for the director to go out drinking with the staff, right?

Yamashita: That's true. It's possible if it's one-on-one.

Nishikawa: You can't just say, "Okay, let's go, everyone!" Maybe with the old coaches that would have been possible (laughs).

Yamashita: That's why I feel lonely. I can honestly say that I feel lonely these days (laughs). Speaking of which, in 2017, the four of us - Mukai (Kosuke), Kondo (Ryuto), and Yamamoto (Tsuyoshi) - went to Korea to film a documentary, and at night we always bought a bottle of whiskey, ice, and carbonated water at the convenience store below the hotel and drank them in our room. That week was a lot of fun.

Director Nobuhiro Yamashita

About four years before that, I drank whiskey in Incheon, Korea. At that time, Izutsu Kazuyuki and I were invited to a film commission tour, and after we ate dinner together, Izutsu took me to a cool bar where we ordered a bottle of whiskey and drank. After we drank a lot, Izutsu said, "I want to eat military hotpot," and we went to several places in the middle of the night, but in the end, none of them were open, so we trudged back to the hotel (laughs). I remember the whiskey we drank in Korea very well.

Nishikawa: That sounds like an intense night.

Q: Was there any reason why you drank whiskey twice in Korea?

Yamashita: When I go to a restaurant in Korea, I usually drink beer or Korean shochu. And if I want to drink something afterwards, I guess it's whiskey. If I go to a convenience store, they always sell whiskey.

Nishikawa: When you go abroad, you can rest assured that you can't go wrong with whiskey. Every country has a few well-known brands on offer.

Yamashita: That's right, this will be fine.
