Directors Miwa Nishikawa and Nobuhiro Yamashita talk about "Film and Whisky" Part 2: Love Cinema. Love Whisky.

I would like to take pictures of women drinking whiskey in their daily lives.

Q: Director Nishikawa, if you were to feature whiskey in your film, what kind of situation do you think it would be?

Nishikawa: For example, if a woman comes home and before she even gets changed, she pours herself a glass of whiskey and drinks some. I've always thought that it's cool, but it's not something that's part of Japanese life, but I'd like to try it out and see what it looks like in real life.

Yamashita: I'll drink whiskey and take out some work documents and look at them.

Nishikawa: That's right. I've never seen this in a Japanese movie or drama before, but if you try it, it might actually seem like a realistic everyday occurrence.

Yamashita: It's true that highballs drunk at bars and whiskey on the rocks sipped quietly at bars are common scenes in Japanese films, but there isn't much about whiskey being a part of everyday life.

Nishikawa: Gena Rowlands looks great drinking in the midst of such casual everyday life. I wonder which Japanese actress would suit that role. But if I were to shoot it myself, I would like to choose an actress who is a little unexpected, not someone who would suit the role.

It might be more interesting to shoot a scene of a woman who doesn't look like a heavy drinker at first glance, sipping a bit of whiskey after work, rather than a scene of someone who looks like a cool heavy drinker.

When I watch movies, I get the impression that Westerners drink whiskey to calm themselves down. Of course, their culture and constitution are different from Japanese people, but I would like to capture a natural, everyday scene, like a woman who doesn't look like that drinking whiskey to relax.

Yamashita: We all grew up admiring the drinking scenes in movies and thinking, "That's cool, I want to try that." I feel like we don't see that kind of cool use of alcohol very often these days, but alcohol is still a sexy item.

Nishikawa: Just the other day, I was watching " Another Round " (director: Thomas Vinterberg, 20), and there was a scene where the main character, a school teacher played by Mads Mikkelsen, goes camping with his wife, who is in a slump in their marriage, and their children, and the couple is drinking whiskey. Even on such occasions, he brings along a cut glass. It's nice that he shows us this custom without being pretentious, as a middle-class person. When I saw the couple slowly drinking amber-colored whiskey in the magic hour scenery just after sunset, I thought to myself, "Oh, I want to drink whiskey outside too."
