Producers gathering at the new BABEL LABEL, aiming for world standard planning and development [Director's Interview Vol.215]
We plan and develop ourselves and own the rights.
Q: When you said that you want to be the Studio Dragon of Japan, what exactly do you mean by that?
Michigami: To put it simply, it means coming up with a plan aimed at the world. Right now, there is a strong focus on making things in Japanese for Japanese people to watch, but we want to change that focus to the world.
Maeda: The specific name Studio Dragon is very easy to understand as a guideline, but it's a drama production company. We also produce movies, so we need to expand even further. One of the interesting things about BABEL LABEL is that each producer is very unique.
Each of them has different works that they have created and aims for, and the networks they have cultivated are also very diverse. When they come together, an interesting chemical reaction occurs, and the direction expands in various ways. Up until now, they have been playing individually, but by gathering like this, they can exchange opinions, become aware of things that they don't have, and share and support each other.
Fujii-san has already been approached by various people, so he's fine, but we have to send out directors who will follow him. Each director is unique and diverse, so I think it's all down to their own motivation.
I think that being motivated is a talent. For example, people who think, "If I just stick with Fujii, something will come of it," will end up there and never grow. After all, it's Fujii who is evaluated there. I think the "motivation" to surpass others will be questioned.
