"Dicks!! The Musical" Aaron Jackson & Josh Sharp - Making people laugh is what makes us happiest [Actor's Interview Vol.48]
A24's first musical, "Dicks!! The Musical," is rated R15+, as you can tell from the frankness of the title. The original story, which combines family drama, love story, science fiction, thriller, and comedy, is a 30-minute comedy musical that was performed off-Broadway by the gay duo Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson, who played the macho twins in the lead roles. The pair, who were active as performers at the popular New York comedy theater "Upright Citizens Brigade," co-wrote the script, produced the show, and even wrote the music, and at the time they played all the characters themselves. We conducted an online interview with Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp. The cheerful duo answered questions with the same enthusiasm as their movie characters.
"Dicks!! The Musical" Synopsis
Craig (Josh Sharp) and Trevor (Aaron Jackson), selfish, popular men working as top salesmen in New York, meet one day by fate and realize that they are twins separated at birth. They rush to reunite their broken families, but their plan goes awry due to the existence of a deformed family that their father (Nathan Lane) had hidden from the world, and it eventually leads to a great secret hidden in the underground world...

There is no self-censorship
Q: When the play was running, did you have any idea it would become a movie?
Jackson Sharp: No (laughs)!
Jackson: This was one of the most popular plays I did. So I had a feeling it could become something, but I never dreamed it would become a movie. I just thought maybe it would lead to some kind of job.
Q: How did you turn the stage version into a film?
Sharp: I tried not to make the film feel too dated. The office uses things like smartphones, and there are rotary dial phones like those in the 1970s. There are taxis from the 1950s and 1970s, so I deliberately used things from various eras.
Jackson: The stage version was performed in a small comedy theater in the basement of a supermarket. The audience there was mostly people who liked absurdist comedy and alternative comedy, so I don't think they had any resistance to the content. But the general public also came to see the film, so I was worried that they would be shocked when they saw it (laughs).

Q: When adapting the film, was there anything in the content that had to be halted or reconsidered?
Sharp: Not at all. That's thanks to working with A24. They love crazy movies to begin with (laughs). The director and producers watched the stage version of the video before they got involved, so they understood the content. Of course, there were some changes when adapting it to film, but there was no self-censorship. The stage audience and the film audience are different, so we adjusted the jokes a little, but we didn't hold back because it was a movie.
Jackson: There was absolutely no holding back from A24, the director, or the producers. Everyone was trying to push the limits this time (laughs).
