Staffing starts with respect

Q: The visual impact of the costumes, hair and make-up, 8-bit animation and design is overwhelming. I think it was partly because the talented staff participated, but how did the director communicate his intentions to the staff?

Nagahisa: In the first place, the first condition for staffing is to talk to people that I respect and love. When I think about what I want to convey to these people with this film, I first tell them the purpose, not the details. Only after we exchange things like that do we start making adjustments to the details.

I think my experience as a commercial planner was put to good use in this area. If you trust them and have them do it for you, you'll end up with something much better. For example, this is a very small detail, but all the people who die in the movie are actually wearing gray clothes. We all played around with that concept. As long as the meaning is correct, it's okay even if the details are slightly off. All staff members shared thoughts on this topic.

Q: Some movie directors direct everything in detail so that their vision doesn't deviate, but in the case of director Nagahisa, he never deviated from his vision during production, right? Is it?

Nagahisa: Almost never. After all, it's important to talk to people you trust, and the same goes for actors. I really like him and want him to appear! I asked him to do one thing for me (lol), and it was a big deal for me to be cast. That's how I ask for everything, including music, costumes, and design. I like him, so it's easy to talk to him. I think that's why it didn't shift.

Q: You're talking to me very casually now, but what was the director like on set?

Nagahisa: It's like this now. I was the most excited on set, saying things like, "Wow! That's amazing! That's great! That's crazy!" (laughs) The staff said, ``There's no place like this. It's like a festival'' (lol).

Q: I see. When I talk to Director Nagahisa, I feel like I understand something (lol).

Nagaku: Since there are so many scenes, the amount of work the staff has to do is incredible. As a director, I felt that I had to express that we were all working together to create something that would change the way movies have been made, and that thanks to everyone, we were able to make something so great. But it was really fun.
