The momentum of ``Parasite'' (2019) was astounding. At the 72nd Cannes Film Festival held in 2019, it became the first Korean film to win the top prize, the Palme d'Or. It won Best Foreign Language Film at the 77th Golden Globe Awards in 2020. At the 92nd Academy Awards, it was nominated in six categories: Best Picture, Director, Screenplay, Editing, Art Design, and Best International Feature Film (it later won an Oscar in four categories, including Best Picture and Best Director!) . It has won approximately 140 awards and been nominated for over 170 film awards around the world, and has been hailed as a "masterpiece of the century" worldwide.
Famous directors from all over the world have said, ``Bong Joon-ho is a film director who deserves the Palme d'Or, the highest award!'' (Alejandro González Iñárritu), ``You'll be captivated from the moment you watch it, and it will continue to grow within you even after you watch it.'' '' (Guillermo del Toro), ``It's an incredibly entertaining, great thriller'' (Edgar Wright), and ``No one can match Bong Joon-ho in storytelling right now'' (Ari Aster). “Parasite” Preview
World box office revenue is over $130 million (as of January 2020). In its home country of South Korea, the audience exceeded 10 million in about 50 days. In the United States, the film was an amazing hit, with the first week's box office revenue being the highest ever for a foreign language film. In France, where the Cannes Film Festival is held, the film attracted more than 1.7 million viewers.
Even in Japan, an unusual promotion was carried out, featuring popular actors Ryo Yoshizawa and Takumi Saito, as well as director Mamoru Hosoda. Advance screenings were held at some theaters to great excitement, and combined with rave reviews from audiences who saw the film first, it has created a huge boom. When it comes to Korean movies, ` `Train to Busan '' (2016) was a hot topic of conversation, including among the light audience, but this film has an even more powerful hit curve.
``Parasite'' has been attracting a lot of attention, but the plot is quite simple. The Kim family, whose four members are unemployed, live in a semi-basement house. Their destinies take a big turn when their eldest son Ki-woo (Choi Woo-sik) is assigned to serve as the wealthy Park family's English tutor in place of his friend Min-hyuk (Park Seo-joon). Ki-woo disguises his identity and infiltrates the Park family, and recommends his younger sister Ki-jeong (Park So-dam) as an art tutor... As the title suggests, it is a story about a poor family becoming a parasite to a wealthy family.

Why was this work such a hit? The main reason for this is probably the fact that it is both ``social'' and ``entertaining.'' With themes such as "poverty" and "disparity," this film has an incisive portrayal of the real world, and a suspenseful plot that continues to defy expectations. And entertainment that crosses genres from comedy to violence to human drama. People's hearts are bound to be captivated by this film as soon as they hear the setting, "A poor family enters into a wealthy family." It seems to be based on his experience.)
Recent Palme d'Or winners include ``I, Daniel Blake'' (2016), ``The Square'' (2017), ``Shoplifters'' (2018), and ``Parasite of which deal with poverty. The series continues, but this one is far more entertaining than the previous three. However, it doesn't become "lighter" and it's terrifying.
``Parasite'' is suitable for any viewer. Regardless of critics or audiences, it arouses the interest of all people, transcending even countries and regions. And this is also director Bong Joon-ho's specialty.
