Cartoon Saloon, an animation studio founded in 1999 by Paul Young, Tom Moore, and Nora Twomey, who were animation classmates at Ballyfermot College in Ireland, is known as "Post-Ghibli". It is a studio that has attracted attention in recent years. He has been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film three times for his animated feature films `` Brendan and the Secret of Kells '' (2009), `` Song of the Sea '' (2014), and ``How to Survive'' (17). His short animated film ``Late Afternoon'' (2017) was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film, and his latest work ``Wolfwalkers'' is also considered a top contender for this year's Academy Awards.

He has produced many fantastical and highly artistic works, and now has many passionate fans around the world. It has received high praise from critics and is a studio you can't help but keep an eye on. ``Wolfwalkers'', produced by such a studio, is the final part of the Kells trilogy, which follows ``Brendan and the Secret of Kells'' and ``Song of the Sea'', which were inspired by the legend of Kells. It's the positioning.

This work, which took approximately seven years to complete from its conception, retains the 2D hand-drawn animation of the past, but now uses 3D software for the wolf's perspective, combining dynamic and realistic expressions. By vividly photographing different landscapes in 2D and 3D, it depicts a hybrid worldview that is a bit different from what has come before.

The movie is set in the medieval Irish town of Kilkenny (as an aside, Kilkenny is the home of the Cartoon Saloon). The main character, Robin, whose father is a wolf hunter from England, meets an eccentric girl, Maeve, in the forest. The child was a "Wolfwalkers" girl, where humans and wolves coexist in one body. Robin and Maeve develop a friendship in the forest, but the forests of Ireland are cut down and cleared one after another by the order of the Lord Protector from England. Furthermore, when Robin learns that Maeve's mother is missing, he begins to search for Maeve's mother and strives to coexist with the wolves of the forest.

I can't help but feel that this story, in which a small girl confronts a powerful society and tries to change the world, has a contemporary theme. Although the story of this work is that of a fantasy work, the story of girls breaking down society's stereotypes is extremely realistic.
