True documentary of a master director

Ms. Katherine Wyler, who is one of the producers, is the most important key person in this film. If you hear Wyler, any movie fan with a good sense of intuition may immediately know, but she is in fact the beloved daughter of William Wyler, America's greatest film director, known for " Roman Holiday " (53) and " Ben-Hur " (59).

While working as vice president of production at Columbia Pictures, Katherine produced the documentary Directed by William Wyler American Masters (1986), which portrayed her father's life and achievements. The film was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award and won a Blue Ribbon Award at the American Film Festival, receiving high praise.

In addition, Enigma Productions, led by David Puttnam, a famous producer who has produced films such as Chariots of Fire (1981) and The Killing Fields (1984), participated in the production of Memphis Belle . Director Michael Caton-Jones had just made his feature film debut with Scandal (1989), a film adaptation of the Profumo scandal starring John Hurt, which is known as the "biggest British political scandal of the 20th century." Memphis Belle was planned with this powerful lineup of producers.

Now, why is producer Katherine Wyler a key figure in this film? Because this film, "Memphis Belle," is a feature film remake of director William Wyler's documentary film "Memphis Belle: The Flying Fortress" (44). In 1943 during World War II, William Wyler, who continued to film actual battlefields as a wartime film director, boarded the "Memphis Belle" on a dangerous mission, flying over Germany several times and recording the actual battle and the bravery of the 10 young men who piloted the "Flying Fortress" on 16mm color film.

David Putnam, who was the chairman and CEO of Columbia Pictures, a subsidiary of Coca-Cola at the time, and Katherine Wyler, who was the vice president of production, were strongly attracted to the original documentary of "Memphis Belle" and started planning a remake. Even after Putnam left Columbia Pictures due to a disagreement with Roberto Goizueta, the chairman of Coca-Cola, Katherine Wyler held on to the project, and finally, with the backing of Enigma Productions led by Putnam, the production got on track. This film is Katherine's ultimate respect for her late father.
