Actor R. Lee Ermey dies
On April 15, 2018, American actor R. Lee Ermey passed away. He passed away at the age of 74. The film that carved his name into film history is ``Full Metal Jacket'' (1987). In this film, Ermey plays Sergeant Hartman, a demonic instructor who trains new recruits and sends them off to fight in Vietnam, and is forever etched in the minds of movie fans for his outstanding (sometimes poetic!) abusive language.
``Full Metal Jacket'' is a work by director Stanley Kubrick set during the Vietnam War, but it clearly distinguishes itself from the ``Vietnam movies'' that were mass-produced in the 1980s. The drama is removed, and the production is like a cold-hearted observation of people locked up in a laboratory, with the writing style of a researcher reporting on the true nature of the military, the ultimate violent device. The biggest factor in giving this impression is the first half of the movie, which takes about an hour to show the training of new recruits. This sequence clearly expresses Kubrick's creative (experimental) intentions.
What does "Full Metal Jacket" mean?
``Full Metal Jacket'' is based on a novel called ``Short Timers.'' ``Short-term draftee'' is a military term used to refer to soldiers who have been assigned ``short-term military service'' of a little over a year. However, Kubrick did not like this title because it suggested a person working part-time, and he was looking for a different title from the beginning of production.

One day, he finds the words ``Full Metal Jacket'' in a gun catalog. The term refers to the copper sheath that completely encloses the lead that is normally used in the bullet heads of bullets. Kubrick immediately liked the sound of this word and adopted it as the title. A bullet reinforced with a metal covering could not be a better metaphor for the transformation of innocent young people into killing machines.
The theme of ``Full Metal Jacket'' is human modification. Kubrick also claimed that ``words can transform people.'' He obtained the best material to prove his hypothesis, R. Lee Ermey, and the experiment began.
