withdrawal from the world

This is an insane performance by a dancer who continues to violently shake his head and wrists in a convulsive manner. The opening scene, in which Enid dances wildly along with the dancers to the powerful Indian rock'n'roll song `` Jaan Pehechan Ho, '' is an excerpt from the Bollywood film ``Gumnaam'' (65). Enid's dance represents a rebellion against the ubiquitous American residential landscape. Music separates Enid from the rest of the world.

“Gumnaam” preview

This incredibly captivating film, which crystallizes the influence of Hollywood musicals with the best of Bollywood technology, was recorded on a VHS tape owned by the original author, Daniel Clowes. It is said that Terry Zwigoff, who stumbled across this idea, came up with what he calls an ``illogical idea'' (*4) that perfectly expresses Enid's cries of not being able to belong anywhere, and not wanting to belong anywhere.

"Mine is different from modern punk. It's the original punk from 1977!"

In Ghost World, music is always with Enid. Music is Enid's ally as she lives with a sense of alienation. When Enid casually plays punk music by the Buzzcocks, she awakens to the "original 1977 punk" and dyes her hair green. Enid resonates with Skip James's ` `Devil Got a Woman, '' which was recorded on the blues vinyl record she bought from Seymour. “I don’t mind being the devil/If I can be her man.” A song that goes nowhere cuts through the space of the room. As if immersed in some sort of meditation, Enid entrusts her body to the music and the music resonates with her. There is a beauty here that makes you feel like you are completely detached from all sentimentality.

Enid becomes isolated. I started to lose the harmonious rhythm that Rebecca and I used to walk around town together. At The Graduate party together, the images of the two of them, entrusting themselves to the music (a wonderful shot of their slightly swaying backs!), end up being left behind somewhere. Enid and Rebecca, who had so much sympathy for each other, lose the magic that held them together as their differences in their values for the future gradually come to the surface. Still, the two search for a room to live together.
