What is the "story arc" that forms the mainstream of American drama?

The "story arc" mentioned by the Russo brothers is different from a traditional movie or a drama in which the story is self-contained in one episode. It is a storyline that spans multiple episodes, and each character leads an episode. It is a term coined in the television industry.

American dramas, which began in the 1950s, also used a style that consisted of self-contained episodes. However, this began to change in the 1980s. The recently deceased TV director Steven Bochco used a story structure in which multiple incidents, large and small, progressed over the course of a season for the police drama Hill Street Blues (1981-1987). At the time, this was called the "modular format" or "layer writing," and it brought about a revolution in the style of drama as a type of story arc.

This revolution in drama style, combined with factors such as the proliferation of multiple channels and the rise of satellite broadcasting, led to the growth of American drama. Masterpieces well known even to Japanese people, such as " Twin Peaks " (1990-91), " ER " (1994-09), and "24 " (2001-14), were formed within this previous trend.

The Russo brothers adapted the story arc that inspired the rise of this TV drama to the MCU, and developed a unique continuity in the world of movies. Looking back, the Avengers (2012), which became the starting point of the MCU, was directed by Joss Whedon, who was also a TV successor to Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003), and the hiring of Whedon shows Marvel's foresight and clarity in determining the direction they were heading.

The Russo brothers also cited the "plateau of Hollywood movies" as the reason for following the TV style. As proof of this, they not only revolutionized American movies by introducing story arcs, but also founded a startup studio called Anthem & Song based in Los Angeles and Beijing. They have partnered with UEP (United Entertainment Partners), which distributes Chinese movies, to explore the development and potential of movies in new Asian markets.

The Russo brothers' approach is based on the desire to "break away from Hollywood movies."
