American dramas, which began in the 1950s, also used a style that consisted of self-contained episodes. However, this began to change in the 1980s. The recently deceased TV director Steven Bochco used a story structure in which multiple incidents, large and small, progressed over the course of a season for the police drama Hill Street Blues (1981-1987).
