TV-based Marvel, movie-based DC

In contrast to Marvel's TV drama style, DC, which has Batman and Superman, has a stronger commitment to the cinematic format, especially in Christopher Nolan's " The Dark Knight " trilogy.

Nolan has interpreted superheroes rooted in the real world, and in order to make them more persuasive, he has thoroughly pursued cinematic pursuits using film shooting and giant screens. It is clear from the style of the pictures and direction of his works that Nolan's approach has been inherited by the DCEU (DC Extended Universe), including " Man of Steel " (2013).

The method that Nolan used is one that DC has had for a long time. The 1977 film "Superman" established a methodology for bringing comic books to the stage as a movie: filling the cast with top Hollywood actors such as Marlon Brando and Gene Hackman, and hiring a top-notch staff including a screenwriter (Mario Puzo), director (Richard Donner) and cinematographer (Geoffrey Unsworth).

These were due to the fact that the film's producers, the Salkind brothers, had signed a contract with Warner Bros. that allowed them the freedom to select the cast and crew, but in return the producers would raise the production funds, so they had to work with first-class filmmakers who could guarantee the success of the film. In addition, director Richard Donner was aware that the key to the success of Superman was that "the film bears a great responsibility," and he was also eager to take the lead in adapting the comics to film.

DC's commitment to the film format can thus be seen as a traditional and constitutional inheritance of the approach demonstrated by Superman.

The DCEU is also developing story arcs in the same way as the current MCU, but it is hard to say that it is necessarily working well. As proof of this, in " Justice League " (2017), director Zack Snyder left the project midway through, and Joss Whedon, the director of "The Avengers," took over as director. This makes it possible to interpret it as "an attempt to incorporate the know-how of Marvel's story arcs."

Of course, Marvel is also very concerned with creating a cinematic scale, and the format established by DC's Superman is an important guide for the MCU's live-action adaptations of American comics, but the success of the MCU's story arcs modeled on TV dramas becomes clearer when compared to DC's film-based approach.
