"Return to Dust" synopsis

Youtie (Wu Renlin) is the poorest farmer in the area, and Kuiying (Hai Qing) has a chronic illness. Due to the intentions of their respective families, the two are forced into a relationship. There are no facial expressions in the wedding photo of the two. However, when the two of them eat fried ma hua on the sand dunes that seem to go on forever, their world together becomes complete in the blink of an eye. When only Youtier and Kuiyin appear in the frame, they are completely cut off from the outside world. And I had a feeling this was going to happen from the moment we met.

Alone in the world

Two people left behind by the waves of progress. In fact, the two of them chose not to ride that wave. Director Li Ruijun's ``Return to Dust'' (22) depicts the question ``What does it mean to move forward in life?'' and ``What exactly is life in the first place?'' ?” is an exploration of that question. Where does the time we live go? Does everything disappear when the body disappears?

“Return to Dust” preview

This work begins with a rural landscape covered in powdery snow and depicts the four seasons. A life that changes like a picture scroll. The two meet in a cold landscape in the middle of winter, but as they go through the process of living together, the scene eventually changes to the color of wheat ears, a warm tone that envelops them. Youtie takes care of a donkey in the cold weather. When Kui-in sees Youtier, she immediately realizes that he is not a person who will do her any harm. For someone who suffers from various chronic illnesses, including incontinence, the discovery that there is someone in this world who does not pose a threat to her must have been a great relief. And Youtier senses the same thing from Kuiin's gaze. The taciturn Youtier is also ridiculed by the local residents for his lack of conformity. Two people who have been banished from this world, so to speak. Finding a non-threatening partner is a difficult situation for both of them.

The scene in ``Alone in the World,'' which can be described as a somewhat science-fiction landscape, shows us that poetry can be born in any world, where we have a meal on a sand dune that stretches to the end of the horizon.
