``The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert'' lovingly portrays a drag queen and becomes a symbol of 90s queer movies
The cast who were not afraid to take risks were successful.
Director Stephen Elliott got the idea for "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" during a Mardi Gras parade in Sydney. He felt the "wind" of Sergio Leone's western movies when he saw a feather falling from a drag queen's head and dancing on the street. In this way, the planning for "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" as an Australian film began to progress around 1992. However, casting was difficult.
Names considered for the role of Bernadette included Tony Curtis, who had cross-dressed in Some Like It Hot (1959), Tim Curry, who played a transvestite in The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975), as well as David Bowie and John Hurt, while Rupert Everett and Colin Firth were approached for the role of Mitch, but none of them came to fruition.

At the time, some Hollywood actors and producers considered playing drag queens or gay characters a risk to one's career. "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" broke that stereotype. Apart from Terence Stamp (Bernadette), who was already world-famous, the two Australians who took on "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" could be said to have had their careers improve. Hugo Weaving (Mitch), who decided to appear in the film due to his friendship with director Elliott, went on to appear in the hit series " The matrix " and " Lord of the Rings ." Guy Pearce (Felicia) was given the important role in " LA Confidential " (1997) after "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert," and went on to star in films such as " Memento " (2000) and " The Time Machine " (2002).
Incidentally, the three main cast members all share the common role of playing villains in American comic book superhero movies: Stamp played Kryptonian commander General Zod in " Superman " (1978), Weaving played a fanatical officer who transforms into the Red Skull in "Captain America: The First Avenger " (2011), and Pierce played the CEO of a huge corporation seeking revenge in " Iron Man 3 " (2013).
