A red screen indicates a premonition of danger.

And in ``EO'', ``color'' is used symbolically. In the scene where EO wanders through the forest, the "green" color of the laser beam shining on the surrounding animals leaves an impression, but the "green" color that appears many times, such as the opening scene with the circus troupe and the scene that seems to be EO's dream, " The bright red image leaves a strong impact. It is clear that Skolimowski attaches meaning to the color red. In `` Early Spring '' (1970), a vivid depiction of a love that can be described as a delusion for an older woman, the scene in which red paint flows is a key point.

"I'm a filmmaker as well as a painter, so I have my own sensibilities when it comes to color. I know which colors evoke which emotions. In this case, red represents danger. It symbolizes. It foretells that something tragic will happen in the next moment. In this work, a donkey experiences the evil and good intentions of humans, and EO takes an unexpected turn. I used the color red to show what I am aware of.”

Director Skolimowski is so famous as a painter that he has even held exhibitions of his work, and he also worked as a screenwriter on Roman Polanski's `` Knife in the Water '' (1962). He has a long career as an actor, which means he deserves the title of artist rather than director. As an actor, in ` `White Nights '' (1985), he played the role of Colonel Chaiko of the KGB, who captures the main character, a ballet dancer (Mikhail Baryshnikov), who defected from the Soviet Union to the United States in Siberia. Furthermore, in " Eastern Promises " (2007), he is the uncle of midwife Anna (Naomi Watts), a self-proclaimed Russian ex-KGB member, and in " The Avengers " (12), he is a Russian who tortures Natasha Romanoff (= Black Widow). He has shown an overwhelming presence as a spy named Luchkov and other important characters.

“A born artist” is how Skolimowski describes himself. ``Since I was a child, I have been drawing pictures, writing poems, and writing scripts for plays and movies.I didn't have enough talent for music, so I gave up on that, and eventually became a film director.'' "When you realize your talent, isn't it an artist's duty to use it effectively?" he adds.

Jerzy Skolimowski will have celebrated his 85th birthday on May 5, 2023, when ``EO'' will be released in theaters in Japan. It is only natural that the eyes of the donkey EO reflect the perspective that he has spent many years looking at the world and humans as an artist.
