“EO” synopsis

EO is a gray donkey with melancholy eyes and overflowing curiosity. He lived in a circus as the partner of the kind-hearted performer Cassandra, but one day he was taken away from the circus. During his unexpected wanderings, he encounters both good and bad people, and endures the gears of fate that turn luck into disaster and despair into unexpected happiness. But he never loses his innocence even for a moment.

I chose an animal that resembles my own personality as the main character.

Many movies have been made with animals as the main characters. However, in the case of live-action fiction rather than documentaries or animation, even if the main character is an animal, there are many cases in which a human character of equal rank appears and the protagonist is seen from that perspective. Or, when a CG animal is the main character, it has a strong fantasy feel, as in `` Paddington '' (14) and `` Peter Rabbit '' (18).

However, there is an animal that breaks the conventional wisdom and plays the role of the main character in a movie. That's a donkey.

`` Where Will Balthazar Go? '' by Robert Bresson, a master of realism, was released in 1966 and is an ambitious work that highlights human sin and wickedness through the cruel fate of a donkey. A miraculous chemical reaction occurs in which you empathize with the main character, the donkey Balthazar, rather than with the main character. Why is my heart so close to Donkey? Polish director Jerzy Skolimowski calls the film ``the only movie that made me cry in my life.'' Skolimowski, who won the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival for `` Departure '' (67), a light-hearted depiction of the love and growth of a young man obsessed with cars, and also won awards at Cannes and Venice, is the inspiration behind `` Balthazar .'' The same donkey was used as the main character in ``EO''.

``EO'' also features a donkey (named EO) as the main character, but his fate is even more complicated than that of `` Balthazar .'' And as we watch the movie, we become one with EO's perspective, rather than the people he encounters wherever he goes, and our hearts are gripped by his fate. The same question arises here again. Why a donkey? Although he was influenced by Balthazar , director Skolimowski explains why he chose a donkey out of many animals as the film's main character:

``Movies have been made in the past with various animals as protagonists, such as pigs (' Babe ' / 1995) and sheep (' LAMB / 21), but the important thing is that the creators Whether you can feel a sense of unity with animals or not.As a representative of animals, whether you can tell a drama to the audience. In my case, it was a donkey.I was fascinated by those melancholy and melancholy eyes.I was fascinated by the world. The suspicion I see in Donkey's eyes when I look at him and the people around me overlaps with Donkey's eyes.Perhaps, personality-wise, I'm the closest to Donkey.''

EO's eyes, which always have a sad side to them, and how he endures no matter how cruel he is, are certainly the most memorable in the series.
