“Love Actually” synopsis

London in December. With Christmas just around the corner, it's the season when everyone is looking for love and trying to give form to their love. David, the new British Prime Minister, is preoccupied with his secretary, Natalie, with whom he fell in love at first sight, contrary to the people's expectations. Meanwhile, in the city, a man who lost his beloved wife is worried about his son-in-law, who has lost his energy without knowing that First Love was the cause, and a heartbroken writer who has been betrayed by his lover falls in love with a Portuguese housekeeper who cannot speak her language. The husband's suspicious behavior arouses his wife's suspicions, and the shy office lady's unrequited love of 2 years and 7 months is about to take a new turn...

An amazing ensemble drama featuring over 20 people all at once.

The fun of group dramas lies in the fact that it is impossible to predict where and how the multiple characters will intertwine and converge toward the end. Speaking of this work, which took on the difficult challenge of having 10 stories (with over 20 characters!) running simultaneously, it is unclear whether the plot will be able to maintain its integrity until the end, or whether the person who should be in the spotlight will be properly shadowed. The key to a work's success, including whether or not it is properly applied, is the writer's handwriting more than anything else.

However, Richard Curtis, who is said to be Britain's greatest writer, easily cleared this hurdle with his first directorial film. On the contrary, when asked, ``Why did you choose to make a group drama?'', he answered, ``Film production takes time anyway. It takes about three years to make one film. With this, the number of films you can make in a lifetime is naturally limited. That's why I decided to try drawing multiple stories at once,'' he says coolly.

As someone with such unique talent, he says, ``One of the sources of this film's creation'' is Joni Mitchell's famous song ``Both Sides Now.''

Joni Mitchell - Both Sides Now

``Love Actually'' is littered with many memorable songs such as ``All You Need Is Love'' and ``God Only Knows,'' and the soundtrack version of the CD also had explosive sales at the time of its release, but the movie This song, which flows softly near the middle of the album, gives the impression that it is a special piece of music even among all the famous songs.

In the film, Emma Thompson's character says, ``Once upon a time, my sensibilities were awakened by the songs of Joni Mitchell,'' and this line seems to have some resonance with the life of Richard Curtis (he was also inspired by Joni Mitchell's music). (He is one of those people who has continued to be influenced by).

What's more, as for ``Both Sides Now'', even before he started working on the script for the film, Curtis had been listening to the new version of the song, the first self-covered song in 30 years, and was blown away by it. It is said that during the editing stage of this work, he holed up in his home's record room and selected song candidates suitable for each scene one by one, but this song was written in the script from the beginning, apart from such song selection framework. It is clear that he played an important role.
