first scene

Only the voices of two women talking could be heard on the pitch black screen. Light change. The ball falls while bouncing down the stairs. The room is filled with plenty of light during the day, so it doesn't have a dark atmosphere, but the ball bouncing down the stairs has also appeared in many horror movies, including Peter Medak's `` Changeling '' (1980). This is a sign that a disturbing situation is approaching (*1).

The family dog walks up the stairs with a ball in his mouth. The person in charge of the conversation appears on the screen. She is a female student who comes to interview best-selling author Sandra (Sandra Hüller) for writing her thesis. Sandra, who was supposed to be the one to ask questions, started asking questions to the students. Then music suddenly starts playing at a loud volume from upstairs. Sandra says that her husband plays the music while he works, which is something she always does, but she is not in a position to continue the interview. As the music continues to play, Sandra sees off the students as they drive away. A long shot reveals that Sandra's home is a remote cabin in the snowy mountains.

Anatomy of a Fall declares several things in its first scene. First, this is a movie about falling, as seen in The Falling of the Ball. The Day After, being asked questions becomes important in later developments. The positions of the questioner and the answerer are often reversed. And the question-and-answer session is often interrupted - meaning it won't proceed as smoothly as it should.

Of course, the role of this scene is not just to present the theme. It also partially alludes to the relationship between Sandra and her husband Samuel (Samuel Theis) at that time. Soon after, Samuel is found dead in the snow by his 11-year-old son Daniel (Milo Machado Graner) with his dog, and the loud music continues to play at this moment and in the scene afterwards when the police rush to the scene and investigate. The music is a cover of 50 Cent's " PIMP " by Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band. The production effect is enormous, and the song selection is also exquisite. Although the melody contains a vague sadness, the cheerful sound of the steel drums creates a contrapuntal effect, and this song will continue to be a motif that recalls the incident.

Based on the circumstances, it is assumed that Samuel fell to his death from the balcony outside the attic. Was it an accident, a suicide, or...? When a recording of the conversation he had with Sandra the day before is discovered on his USB drive, Sandra is suspected of murder. She is accused, and the ``anatomy'' of Samuel's ``fall'' begins (*2).
