The strongest “beloved movie” that changed the image of Hollywood blockbuster directors

It's been five years since film director Tony Scott mysteriously committed suicide. Considering that his older brother Ridley Scott is still actively making films even at the age of 79, fans can't help but wonder if he should have continued to be active.

In the latter half of Tony Scott's life, his over-the-top, almost paranoid visual style came to be appreciated as an artist, but he is still an underrated figure. In the early stages of his career, he was regarded as a favorite director of Hollywood's biggest hit makers, Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer, and was treated as the ``embodiment of commercialism.''

Scott's feature debut was in the stylish vampire film `` The Hunger '' (1983), but it was `` Top Gun '' (1986), his first with Simpson and Bruckheimer, that established him as a hitmaker. It's a big breakthrough for Tom Cruise, who stars in it, but it's an MTV-style coming-of-age war movie, so it's a rather frivolous package.

Michael Bay, a junior member of the Simpson-Bruckheimer duo, was also ridiculed by critics for being ``all flashy and lacking in substance.'' Compared to his older brother Ridley, who also directed entertainment blockbusters, was praised as an ``auteurist director'' thanks to `` Alien '' (1979) and ` `Blade Runner '' (1982), but critics were colder towards him. Scott also said that he stopped reading reviews after The Hunger.

Of course, there are many people around the world who enjoy Scott's action blockbusters. However, there has always been a tendency to separate ``filmmakers'' from ``professional directors,'' and only ``filmmakers'' are praised as artists. It can be said that this is a bad habit of movie lovers.

However, 1993's ``True Romance'' was a major turning point in Scott's rise, even though it was never a huge hit. ``True Romance'' made movie fans look at Scott with more affection, and Scott suddenly became a ``beloved director.''
