Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan

Q: Please tell me about the casting of Kate Winslet as Mary.

Francis: When I was writing the script, I didn't have a specific actor in mind. After the script was completed, I started thinking about who would be suitable. I always wanted to ask a British actor. I also had to be in my 40s and be willing to follow my unique style. Meanwhile, I was drawn to Kate Winslet. It seemed like a good thing for Kate. I thought that if I could work with her in the way I had envisioned, it would definitely be a wonderful work and one of her masterpieces. So I sent him the script.

Q: What was it like casting Saoirse Ronan as Charlotte?

Frances: Charlotte is an upper-class English woman. Charlotte is a very difficult role to play as she changes dramatically throughout the movie. At first, she is controlled and oppressed by her husband and is like a puppet, but in the end she becomes a woman who firmly owns her own person and can make decisions according to her own will. It was a very difficult casting.

When I saw Saoirse Ronan's work, I was surprised at the richness of her expressiveness and found it very appealing. She showed a different side in each role, but none showed as much range as Charlotte did. That's why I wanted to see him change through this work.

Q: How did you feel about re-appointing the cast from the previous film?

Francis: We re-appointed four members from the cast of God's Own Country for this production. The main cast includes Alec Secareanu and Gemma Jones. Sarah White and Liam Thomas have also been cast again. If an actor is fun to work with, I have complete confidence in their acting ability and creativity. I love actors who can transform into someone else. It was easy and a wonderful experience to have an actor with whom I already have a relationship play a different role. Whether it's the actors or the crew, I want to increase the number of people I enjoy working with.
