A “shy” production that doesn’t look too dramatic

There are many reasons why "Zombieland" is loved, such as it being "bright and fun," "positive," "the cast is lively," "full of movie references," and "the rules and other settings are interesting," but personally I would also like to add that it has "a drama that is not intrusive."

However, even though the "party movie" that the production team is having fun with may seem open, it is selective of its viewers. This is because the emotional "temperature" is too high to begin with, making it difficult to get on the same wavelength. Whether you like it or not depends on how much you can empathize with the creators, but that is not the case with "Zombieland." At first glance, it may seem like a hardcore genre movie, but that would not have made it to $100 million at the box office worldwide. There is always a universal point of empathy hidden within it that moves people all over the world.

Anyone who watches the show can understand what makes it so appealing. It's the gap between the characters and their feelings, and the "shy" direction that doesn't make it seem too serious.

Columbus, Tallahassee, Wichita, and Little Rock are all "victims." Before they have a chance to enjoy their youth, their days with loved ones are taken away, and if they let their guard down, they can sink deeper into the world and wonder, "Why am I the only one alive?" In this film, the "sorrow of lives disappearing" that is present in Dawn of the Dead movies is not presented, but is shown as a "past" that is buried deep within each person's heart. This subtlety makes even Tallahassee, who has a strong character, feel human at all times, and does not create a gap between the audience and the film. This is because it is easy to understand that they are acting out this "pretense" in order to survive in this world.

If you decide to live, it's no fun to be pessimistic. The "positivity" that I mentioned earlier paradoxically has "despair." The psychology of these four people is first and foremost filled with human sadness and suffering, and the logic that they behave cheerfully in order not to be dominated by them is carefully presented, so the film does not have the "select your audience" structure mentioned earlier.

Another big factor is that all the characters are honest. The sisters Wichita and Little Rock are the type of people who consider "betrayal" to be acceptable in order to survive, while Columbus and Tallahassee criticize others but do not hate them from the bottom of their hearts. The characters are fundamentally created based on the "theory of human goodness," and the people who try to live together in this world at the end of the century are portrayed in a positive light.

In the world of Zombieland, there are no bad people. Perhaps that is why viewers can enjoy the story without feeling bitter about it.

Although the film is a Dawn of the Dead movie and therefore somewhat cruel (though not scary or disgusting), Director Fleischer looks at the characters with a warm eye and does not overly dramatize their tragedy. This is because he portrays people who value "having fun", regardless of what happened in the past. The offbeat direction, which at first glance seems "cannibalistic", opens the door to the viewer and is also the basis for empathy.
