A true-to-life script that reflects the divorce experiences of those involved

Now, let's talk about why ``Marriage Story'' has received such high praise, and to put it simply, what is the unique charm of this work, from aspects such as ``story,'' ``acting,'' and ``direction.'' I would like to consider this.

The first big thing is that this work is a ``love story that begins with divorce.'' However, while there are some similarities with the Japanese TV dramas `` The Best Divorce '' (13) and `` Cramer, Cramer '' (1979), they are very different. ``Marriage Story'' is an ongoing story.

The film begins with divorce negotiations, and is structured so that the audience simultaneously relives the fate of the couple. Over the course of two hours, the audience will experience the long and physically demanding process of divorce through mutual agreement and divorce trial. What's interesting is that director Noah Baumbach, Scarlett Johansson, Adam Driver, and Laura Dern, who plays the divorce lawyer, have all experienced divorce. Director Baumbach, Johansson, and Dern are themselves divorced, and Driver's parents are divorced.

Additionally, the three cast members were cast in the film before the script was completed, and each of them shared their opinions with director Baumbach to help shape their characters. The divorce lawyer played by Dern reflects the characteristics of the real person who was in charge of Johansson and Dern's divorce, and this is his fourth collaboration with director Baumbach, including this work. This is a driver proposal.

What you can see from this is that the cast and director faced the theme of ``divorce'' head-on while closely exchanging opinions. Director Baumbach also brought in a real-life lawyer to supervise the film in order to portray it as The Truth as possible. This work, which carefully incorporates each person's own experiences and suggestions from professionals, has a realistic atmosphere rather than a fantasy one, and this solid foundation also enhances the ``emotions'' that dwell in the drama parts.

In other words, the events depicted here and the feelings the characters have each time are all ``real'' and rooted in real-life experiences. There are cases where negotiations become complicated and lead to a trial, cases where someone else intrudes into the private affairs of a couple and the two parties are left behind, and cases where they may not have wanted to hurt each other, but small mistakes or comments from the past This work is always filled with vivid scenes, such as the process in which each other's lawyer interprets the matter too much and it becomes a quagmire battle, and the frustration of two people who cannot give up their parental rights and are forced to work hard to earn points in court and government offices. The movie is haunted by ``pain'' and does not provide easy relief for the viewer, just like the couple.

"Marriage Story"

However, the reason that ``Marriage Story'' never becomes too much of a mushy conflict is not only due to director Baumbach's sophisticated touch, but also because it always depicts ``love'' and ``respect'' between husband and wife. Because it is. The reason why these two decided to divorce in the first place is due to the difference in their life stages, and although there may be some fluctuations in their love for each other, there is no definitive disagreement or rift. For this reason, they chose a negotiated divorce without hiring a lawyer, and even though they end up going to court, their feelings for each other do not weaken but grow stronger throughout the work.

This movie maintains a high-quality atmosphere and heightens its drama by using this love as its edge. The more realistic the couple's path to divorce becomes, the more poignantly the love they show for each other shines through. What they really feel is not ``I want a divorce,'' but ``I have no choice but to divorce.'' If we had been a little more considerate and observant, this situation could have been avoided. This theme is similar to Baumbach's breakthrough film `` The Squid and the Whale ,'' but the irreversibility of time and the story, such as ``you can't go back'', functions cruelly in this film as well. What we, the audience, witness is a love that ends as a result of a wrong step.

Love is a living thing. If they are not properly nurtured, they will die before their lifespan. ``Marriage Story'' seems to strongly reflect the sad lessons the creators learned in their own lives.
