"Midsommar" Demonic induction from fear to "empathy" - A love story that erases the ego
2020.02.22
“Midsommar” synopsis
Danny, who lost his family in an unexpected accident, visits a ``once-in-90-years festival'' held in the hinterlands of Sweden with his girlfriend and friends who are studying folklore at university. The village, where beautiful flowers bloom in abundance and the sun never sets, seemed like a paradise where kind residents sang and danced cheerfully. However, a disturbing atmosphere gradually begins to appear, and Danny's heart is disturbed. Delusions, trauma, anxiety, fear... it was the beginning of an unimaginable nightmare.

It's a scary movie. Just watching it takes over your ego.
Carefully designed "bait" for empathy...and seduction.
As expected, I was saved.
In 2018, an unknown film director shocked the world. His name is Ari Aster. Born in 1986, the young director was first seen by A24, which produced and distributed Moonlight (2016) and Lady Bird (2017), and made his first full-length commercial film, Hereditary . (18) was released.
The film received rave reviews from critics when it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, and debuted in fourth place at the weekend box office when released in the United States. It was engraved in people's minds as a new masterpiece of horror movies. Nowadays, movies such as ` `It Follows '' (2014), ` `The Killing of a Sacred Deer' ' (2017), and ` `Get Out '' (2017) are sure to be included in the list of recent horror-style masterpieces. It's so popular that it's ranked high.

While everyone is eagerly awaiting his new work, this is director Ali's second feature film in collaboration with A24. ``Midsommar'' (2019) is a work that combines ``evolution'' and ``deepening'' that surpasses that of ``Hereditary.'' Frankly speaking, I can't help but feel in awe, wondering, "How can just one work raise the level so much?"
At the setting stage, we can already see the new weapon of ``understandability.'' The story of this work is ``College students visit a community in a remote area of Sweden and encounter something terrible''...that's all. “ Cross-cultural exchange” is a common theme in horror/thriller films, such as “The Green Inferno ” (2013), which depicts an encounter with cannibals, and “ Green Room ” (15), which is set in a neo-Nazi den. You can see the solid sense of stability in the choice without being strange.
Furthermore, this time, as I will discuss in more detail later, it is not a horror story, but a love story. The previous film, ``Hereditary'', was an intelligent horror movie with foreshadowing laid out from the first cut, and it was a highly literate movie that required some knowledge of ``devil worship'' and the occult. This time, that "height of hurdles" has been removed, and the audience can enjoy the fate of a couple in a period of boredom from scratch. If the previous film was a movie that required "knowledge," this one is a movie that can be enjoyed along with the "experience" of love. Targets have been clearly expanded.
Also, as I will explain later, the screen composition is the exact opposite of the previous work. After all, this time it's bright and colorful. Traditionally, "scary" movies have often used "darkness" effectively, but this film is set in the Land of the Midnight Sun, so it is completely bright. The ``unconcealed'' fear that something terrible will happen while everything is exposed to the light of day. This is also a very innovative point of evolution that is easy to get into.
The structure in which the ``genre'' shows gradations within the work is also truly outstanding. Midsommar changes from suspense to mystery to horror to thriller to comedy to love story to keep the audience glued to the screen.
I would like to state here that this is by no means a ``genreless'' movie. While firmly bringing out the features of each genre, they are appealing with their own unique coloring. It is a very modern fusion movie, similar to director Bong Joon-ho's ` `Parasite '' (2019), which is considered one of the best films of the year.
