A realistic fight scene created by a master choreographer

So, as an entry point, it may be a good idea to call it a "tearjerker movie." But, of course, that's not all that makes this film so appealing. Thinking back 40 years ago, boxing movies were all the rage in the film world, and another cultural and social trend was the increasing number of family films with the theme of "marital divorce."

What is interesting about "The Champ" is that it luxuriously features two elements that could be said to be popular at the time. The first thing to note is the "boxing" element that is the theme of this film. How on earth was the realistic fight that decorates the final scene portrayed? The key person who appears here is Jimmy Gambina. He was also involved in the fight scenes in " Rocky " (1976).

Voight expressed his desire to do all the parts himself, without relying on a stunt double, so Gambina gave him vitamin injections and woke him up at 4am the next morning to go jogging, and began rigorous training. Voight, who stands over 190cm tall, had played a boxer before, so he was quick to pick up the characters. Gambina therefore created a high-level choreography that suited him, and cast professional boxer Randall Cobb as his co-star.

Voight moves with graceful steps. He throws a punch. The other's punch sinks in at high speed. The fight continues in a desperate state until both fighters fall. Although it seems that the two men never actually land a punch on each other, the fight looks very real when seen through the camera. Combined with the reactions of the 300-strong crowd, who go wild with their every move, it's an exciting scene that makes the viewers clench their fists tightly.
