“The Champ” synopsis

Billy, a former world champion boxer, has been addicted to drinking and gambling ever since his wife ran away from him. With no one to talk about his past fame, Billy's son TJ, who never doubts his comeback and keeps calling him "The Champ," is the only one he can rely on. Billy, upset when his wife Annie suddenly appears in front of them, calls the police and almost loses his precious TJ. Billy decides to get back into the ring for his son who still believes in himself!

The movie ``The Champ'' (1979), which was created at the turn of the 1970s and 1980s, is a masterpiece that continues to move many people around the world to tears. Or maybe it would be better to describe it a little more straightforwardly as a ``cry movie'' that was representative of its time.


So, what is the point where you can cry? First of all, the heartwarming exchange between a former boxing champion (Jon Voight) and his innocent son (Ricky Schroder) who adores him as "The Champ" brings tears to your eyes, like a small jab from the beginning. The scene in which a woman (Faye Dunaway) appears to the two of them and confesses, ``I'm your mom,'' is quite tearful. However, what is even more amazing is the spectacular boxing match crammed into the final 20 minutes and the dramatic final scene that follows.

I also encountered this work for the first time at this age, and as expected, I shed tears. Surprisingly, in the audio commentary included on the DVD, Schroeder, who has grown up (he was a child actor at the time of filming), is crying beyond words, and Voight, who plays the father, is seen crying beside him.
