Master craftsman Rossen had a bad time due to the Red Scare.

Another thing to note when understanding this film is the presence of director Robert Rossen (1908-1966).

He was known as an excellent screenwriter, and as a director he left behind masterpieces such as 1949's ` `All the Kingsmen '', but he was also involved in the ``Red Scare'' that raged in Hollywood from the late 1940s to the mid-50s. His past history as a member of the Communist Party was revealed, and he became a target of the House Un-American Activities Committee. He was asked to testify before the committee, but he refused and was blacklisted. This effectively meant expulsion from the film industry.

If he wants to return to the film industry, he must stand on the witness stand and reveal the names of his former colleagues. Many people did so. Elia Kazan is one of them. Although Robert Rossen had refused to testify for several years, he was finally forced to make a difficult decision and decided to take the stand.

Although this incident allowed him to make films again, he remains a traitor to those whose names were sold. In the end, he never returned to Hollywood, the capital of movies, and was forced to continue making films overseas and in New York.
