Encounter between Polish Americans and Hmong people
Let's take a look at a little bit of history. Immigrants from Poland are thought to have originated in the United States as engineers during the Western pioneering era, but their numbers only increased in the 20th century. They were a much later arrival than the British, Dutch, German, French, and Swedish settlers who settled in the 17th century. Like the Italians who came to America at the same time, they struggled to find work in the New World, despite facing unfair discrimination.
Perhaps because they are proud of having survived their daily lives on their own without receiving aid from the state, many people strongly oppose Obamacare, which diverts tax dollars to the welfare of others. Politically, the majority are said to be conservative blue-collar voters who form the base of support for the Trump administration. In other words, because Polish people were late immigrants to the United States, many of them had a strong desire to be recognized as Americans and were inclined toward conservatives.

The Hmong are an even later group of immigrants. As Hmong girl Hsu explains in the film, they are a mountain tribe that originally lived in Laos, Thailand, and China. When the Vietnam War broke out, he sided with the United States, but later fled to the United States due to fear of retaliation from communist forces. In a sense, you could say that they are victims of history.
``Gran Torino'' is about a Polish man who established himself as a conservative American after suffering discrimination for a long time, and a man of Polish descent who escaped to the United States when he was caught up in the war, but ended up facing discrimination in his new home. It is a story of an encounter between the Hmong people.
