What is the appealing commonality of the trilogy?

Although the plots of each of the three films are different, they are all set against the backdrop of the Italian wilderness, and tell the story of bourgeoisie members who are dragged into unexpected fates by the irresistible desires that arise within them. Their desires sometimes push people to the brink of despair, sometimes to the depths of despair, but on the other hand, some people are able to carve out a new life for themselves.

I will explain each work separately. First, Emma, the heroine of " Milano, Love is a Russian immigrant who married into an Italian aristocratic family. In order to escape the cramped conditions of her home, she starts an affair with a young chef who is her son's friend. Also, Elio, the protagonist of " Call Me by Your Name ," falls madly in love with a young American he meets in Lombardy during the summer and experiences a painful breakup, but he begins to regenerate immediately afterwards.

Human desires are always troublesome, but that is what drives the story toward a dramatic conclusion, including cinematic thrills, suspense, and, of course, erotic pleasure. Meanwhile, Guadagnino has generously poured his work with smooth camerawork, subtle colors, and bold, dynamic music, building a sophisticated world that inherits the tradition of European cinema.

So how does the desire depicted in "A Bigger Splash" manipulate human destiny? While this film basically follows " The Sun Knows " (1969), starring Alain Delon and directed by Jacques Deray, the details and style are different, so it is called a "loose remake."

This film is also inspired by a potpourri art piece by British pop artist David Hockney entitled "Bigger Splash," the same title as the film. It is an absurdist painting of a pool with a diving board in front of it, and although there is no one there, splashes of water appear on the surface as if someone had jumped in.

The film uses that swimming pool as the setting for the climax. Rock star Marianne (Tilda Swinton) and her cinematographer boyfriend Paul (Matthias Schoenaerts) are on vacation on a beautiful isolated island in Italy when one day Marianne's ex-boyfriend Harry (Ralph Fiennes), a music producer, shows up with his daughter Pen (Dakota Fanning). A love quadrangle develops between them, and subtle friction begins to form.

Although Marianne's love for Harry has long since disappeared, Harry persistently presses her to get back together with him. Naturally, Paul is upset, and Pen, who is obviously interested in him, approaches him. Harry introduced Pen to everyone as his daughter, but it seems that this is not the case. This drama of desire, which seems orchestrated, eventually comes to an unexpected end, set in a midsummer swimming pool like a Hockney work, leaving a mystery on the water where the afterglow of a missing person lingers eerily on the surface.
