``Four movies'' that supported and guided Dolan



``Matthias & Maxime'' is a love story depicting the fluctuations in feelings between best friends. Matias (Gabriel d'Almeida Freitas) and Maxime (Xavier Dolan), who have been best friends since childhood, end up kissing in a "punishment The Game." Unprecedented feelings suddenly arose between the two of them. One tries to accept, the other tries to reject. But neither can go back to normal. A trembling and delicate conflict is woven throughout the story.


What is interesting about this work is its origin. After watching `` Call Me by Your Name '' (2017), Dolan was so impressed that he was ``so moved that I couldn't move for a while,'' and with that emotion in mind, he began writing the script. That is what this work was about. In addition, there are three other works in Matthias & Maxime to which Dolan expressed his gratitude. These include `` God's Own Country '' (2017), `` In a Corner of Brooklyn '' (17), and `` Confessions of a Boy '' (18), in which he appeared.


These four films all depict sexual minorities, and it is said that their existence was a big support for him to depict the love story of two young men in ``Matthias & Maxime''. Dolan's films have always contained homosexual elements, but he himself was troubled by the opinions of those inside and outside the country.

In the first place, it is strange to discuss only that aspect. What Dolan continues to depict is "love" itself, and the idea that romantic feelings are dependent on gender may not be modern. However, it seems that there were many reactions, both good and bad.


However, he says that by watching a work created by the same filmmaker, he gained the courage to stick to his motif. Instead of being strangely proud, the part where he says ``movies will save me'' is very honest (even at the beginning of the movie, he thanks each director), and it shows Doran's pure personality. It seems there is.


The filming location and crew also became something he could call "home." Dolan felt that he really wanted to film with his friends in his hometown of Quebec, Canada, and although he had completed the script, he waited until after he had finished filming The Death and Life of John F. Donovan (18) before returning home. The film was later shot on 65mm film over a period of 48 days. The production staff, director of photography, and other members are all familiar with Delan's work, and the cast also includes Anne Dorval, who can be said to be the muse of Delan's work.


Best of all, Dolan also appears as an actor. He plays the main character, Maxim, a young man.
