Slapstick black comedy “The Return of the Living Dead”

The line that references `` Night of the Living Dead '' at the beginning of the main story has more meaning than just fan service.

Romero's ``Night of the Living Dead'' and his follow-up `` Dawn of the Dead '' are ``serious'' works that skillfully reveal the social criticism inherent in the existence of Dawn of the Dead.

On the other hand, ``The Return of the Living Dead'' assumes that ``Night of the Living Dead'' is a world that is ``based on facts,'' and says, ``The movie you're about to watch is a false story. ”, it is in the form of a reminder. In other words, it has become a metafiction.

If anything is fiction after all, even the serious hardships faced by the characters and the troubles that lead to their deaths are lies no matter how far they go. It has the effect of making an impression. In other words, in contrast to Romero's ``Dawn of the Dead'' works, which are serious and include social criticism, ``Dawn of the Dead'' has been restructured into something ``completely different'' as an intense black comedy.

In addition, ``The Return of the Living Dead'' incorporates many of the techniques typical of O'Bannon, who is a movie buff and former screenwriter. The moment you look at the drum containing Dawn of the Dead and say, ``This is a drum made by the U.S. Army. It won't leak!'' it starts leaking gas. In addition, Trash, the female character who dances completely naked, makes a strange impression by saying, ``What kind of death would you like? I don't want to be surrounded by a bunch of old people and get eaten alive.'' He is bitten by a horde of pathetic Dawn of the Dead and becomes a Dawn of the Dead. It's a fun story with brilliant pretends and punch lines that are typical of a scriptwriter.

Additionally, the scene in which Thalman first appears uses a dolly zoom, also known as the "Vertigo shot." The Dolly Zoom is used in Hitchcock's `` Vertigo '' (1958) in a scene that emphasizes fear of heights, and in Spielberg's `` Jaws '' (1975), the moment when Chief Brody learns of a shark attack. The scene is also famous. In other words, it can be said that the camera work is famous for expressing the "attack of Monster".

It is said that ``a director's first film is packed with everything the director has,'' but ``The Return of the Living Dead'' uses outstanding techniques used in past masterpieces, exchanges lines that are typical of a screenwriter, etc. This is a truly O'Bannon-like work.
