What Italian and British films influenced this work?

By the way, the original author, Rex Pickett, was said to have been somewhat influenced by the British film ` `Withnail and I '' (1987) when writing the book.

Set in the late 1960s, at the end of a cultural wave, this is a story about two best friends, addicted to drink and drugs, who try to spend a weekend in a cottage in an unbelievably elegant setting. It's a conversation that shows the relationship between the two, and there's a hint of loneliness at the end, and I see that it has a similar flavor to Sideways.

Director Alexander Payne also says that ``Withnail and I'' is his favorite movie. However, it seems that he did not refer to it when pursuing the path of making it into a movie. Rather, he points to the cult-popular Italian film ``The Passing Guy'' (62) as a reference work. The story is about a young man and an unconventional middle-aged man who meet by chance and go out for a drive together, but the two, who are complete opposites, develop a friendship with each other, and at the end, the story ends in a frenzy.

When working on ``Sideways'', director Payne carefully analyzed and researched this movie scene by scene, and he was particularly influenced by aspects such as the shooting method and location while driving a car.

By the way, ``The Passing Guy'' also influenced the monumental road movie of the 1960s, `` Easy Rider '' (69), and `` Motorcycle Diaries '' (2004), which was representative of the 2000s.
