A masterpiece that combines a road movie with a love of wine

What is your favorite movie genre? When asked this question, many people answer "road movies." That being said, I love it too. There are scenery that has never been seen before, there is a purpose for the journey, and the growth of the protagonist's mind is etched in proportion to the distance traveled. For those of us who watch the scene up close, we can experience the feeling of being a companion in the passenger seat of a car during just a two-hour story.

``Sideways'', produced in 2004, is a masterpiece that thoroughly entertained movie fans who love road movies.

Oh, I wasn't the only one who liked road movies. Another element of this work is that of a ``wine lover''.

“Sideways” preview

The story depicts a group of middle-aged men on a winery pilgrimage to Santa Barbara, California. A fresh red with fruit flavors poured into the glass. Fresh aroma and taste. Then, the madness that ensues and the encounter with the woman of destiny. Of course, it's an irresistible subject for wine lovers, but what makes this film so great is that even people who don't really like wine can find themselves saying, ``Hmm, this smell...'' after watching the movie. It probably made me feel as if I had learned a lot about wine.

One theory is that, perhaps because the audience was larger than expected, sales of the main character's beloved Pinot Noir increased more than usual in the year the film was released. This is a direct selling point from the movie, but it seems that Pinot is a breed that is ``troublesome and difficult to grow, but the amount of love and time that you put into it will reward you''. This is perfectly suited to the character of the difficult protagonist Miles, played by Paul Giamatti.

In that case, my best friend Jack, who is sociable and cheerful no matter what, is just like Cabernet. There's even a line in the movie that says, ``Cabernet will grow properly if you leave it alone, but Pinot takes a lot of work.'' When two people with completely opposite personalities become best friends, they know all about each other's strengths and weaknesses, and they have matured their relationship over many years to become the friends they are today. I understand.
