"Some Like It Hot" (59)

Manhattan shaken in a water pillow

Director: Billy Wilder Cast: Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, Marilyn Monroe

Speaking of alcohol, it's a party!

However, in the United States, an evil law called Prohibition was enacted that completely prohibited alcohol, making it impossible to enjoy alcohol openly. However, even in those days, common people seemed to consume alcohol in a variety of ways. Marilyn Monroe and Billy Wilder's masterpiece `` Some Like It Hot '' is a masterpiece set in the Prohibition era, and is full of the charm of alcohol when it was a contraband item.

Joe and Jerry are band members who are chased by a gang for some strange reason. The two disguise themselves as women and sneak into a female orchestra's Miami tour. There, he met the singer Sugar and fell in love at first sight. Sugar sneaks into Jerry's bed on the sleeper train and asks him if he would like to have a drink, but other orchestra members discover that he has alcohol, and a crowd gathers around, leaving only a few women in the narrow bed. We gather and the party begins.

Everyone here makes the whiskey-based cocktail ``Manhattan.'' 2/3 whiskey and 1/3 sweet vermouth. The original ``Manhattan'' is made by adding a drop of bitters and submerging the cherry, and is said to be so difficult to make that it has earned the nickname ``Make the barman cry.''

It's such a messy cocktail, but in this movie, there are some hilarious scenes in which the cocktail is made in a rather violent manner, such as using a drumstick as an ice pick to crush the ice, and adding alcohol to a water pillow and shaking it.

Considering the origins and historical background of Jerry and his friends who were members of a Chicago band, it is likely that the whiskey at this time was smuggled from Canada. During the Prohibition era, Hiram Walker of the Canadian Club and Seagram's of the Seven Crowns had distilleries in Chicago , Canada, across the lake from Chicago, producing whiskey that could no longer be produced in the United States. It is said that he made a huge profit by smuggling.

Incidentally, `` The Untouchables '' (1987) depicts the famous Chicago gangster Al Capone smuggling whiskey from Canada.

However, the bottle used in the filming of Some Like It Hot had a Kentucky bourbon label on it that read ``River Boat Whiskey,'' so it appears to have been a rough prop. .
