The criminal played by Robert De Niro in Heat was a real person! A crime saga built with a thorough focus on authenticity.

Except for the murder, I experienced almost everything else.
For the remake, director Mann wanted the actors to look like ``real criminals'' and ``real cops.'' Any movie director would think so. However, the thoroughness of Mann's method was a little out of line. Val Kilmer, who played one of the criminals alongside De Niro, said:
``Except for murder, I experienced almost everything else.''

Before filming began, Mann decided to have the actors experience how criminals commit crimes, what they think, and how they feel. Tom Sizemore, who also played one of the criminals, visited the prison and spoke to inmates who had criminal histories of stealing large sums of money, to find out the psychology behind their crimes. Furthermore, to experience the preparations for a bank robbery, students disguised themselves and visited an open bank. Pretending to be a customer receiving loan forms, he inspected the bank and considered how he could attack the bank. They even visited a restaurant in Los Angeles where real-life gangsters eat, and even ate at the same table. What is the point of doing that...
There is a phenomenon called magnetization, where when a magnet comes into contact with a metal such as iron, that metal has a "magnetic force". That was exactly what Coach Mann was aiming for. By thoroughly exposing the actors to the ``magnetic field'' that only the ``real thing'' has, they attempted to imbue them with the ``magnetic force'' of the real thing. Director Mann happily says that the effect was tremendous.
"Tom Sizemore was amazing in the restaurant scene, glaring at the customers. He's got that look that kills people!"
If you can't load bullets as fast as him, I'll kick you out!
