Brought to you by Louis Malle's masterpiece

This film is often described as an autobiographical, personal novel-like film. Indeed, when Noah Baumbach was a teenager, his parents, both writers, divorced. This work is set in Brooklyn, the same place where he grew up. Also, as I just searched online, I realized that my father, Jonathan Baumbach, who is known as a novelist, is a man with a thick beard covering half of his face, just like Jeff Daniels in this work. When the conditions are met, we feel proud to call it an ``autobiography.''

However, Baumbach seems to be reluctant to use that word. I think that this complex and mysterious psychology unique to the creator is what makes ``The Squid and the Whale'' so interesting.

The first thing we need to know is that Baumbach went through several evolutionary processes before realizing this work.

His parents' divorce was a big deal for him when he was a boy. It seems like he had the idea to write about this from the beginning, but what he initially wrote was more factual. The idea was that the brothers, now adults in their 30s, would look back on their past memories and think about how their parents' divorce had affected them psychologically.

However, this format changed dramatically over time. As he wrote flashbacks from his childhood, he realized that it felt more realistic to him to use a child's perspective throughout the story, rather than focusing on the adult protagonist. However, Baumbach still had doubts in his mind. Although it feels real, will this movie be successful if it is told from a child's perspective?

At that time, a film called `` Curiosity '' (1971) directed by Louis Malle brought him a light that could be called a revelation. He said he saw this movie with Wes Anderson in a screening room in Midtown. Indeed, this is a work that strongly conveys the inner turmoil of adolescence, which is also the underlying theme of ``The Squid and the Whale.''

Laurent is a boy who learns of his mother's affair and struggles with his own complicated feelings. A jazz tune that colors your heart. This film, which takes advantage of the perspective of a child, shows glimpses of sexual and uneasy feelings at times, but never loses its freshness. Baumbach was encouraged by this work, and he confidently decided to ``focus on a child's perspective.''
