“2046” synopsis

In 1966, Chau returned to Hong Kong during a turbulent time after having had an affair with Su Li-chen, also known as Mrs. Chan, and breaking off the relationship. However, Chau still cannot forget his love affair with his wife. New heroines appear and influence his life.



"A person with a great secret finds a large tree in the mountains and whispers the secret into a hole dug in the trunk. The hole is filled with earth and sealed forever so that the secret will not leak out." The final part of Wong Kar-wai's ``60s trilogy,'' ``2046'' (2004), is based on the words spoken at the end of her previous work, `` In the Mood for Love '' (2000). The first shot of the movie is a large hollow that resembles a hole in a large tree. Taku, played by Takuya Kimura, says the same words in his opening monologue.


Kar-wai said that this work is not a sequel to ``In the Mood for Love.'' However, the main character is the same Chau Mo Wan (Tony Léon: The Professional), and the stories are tightly connected. On the contrary, some characters reappear from the first film of the 1960s trilogy, `` Days of Being Wild '' (1990), and this trilogy has created a huge worldview that can be called the ``Wong Kar-wai Universe.'' It's being woven. In 1966, Chau returned to Hong Kong during a tumultuous time after having had an affair with Su Li-chen, also known as Mrs. Chan, and breaking off the relationship. However, Chau still cannot forget his love affair with his wife. Then new heroines appear and influence his life.


The woman who starts the story is Lulu/Mimi (Karina Lau), who appears for the first time since "Days of Being Wild." Chau, who was reminded of his past memories after meeting her, tries to stay in room 2046 of the hotel, but for some reason he is directed to the next room, room 2047. There, Chau meets Bai Ling (Zhang Ziyi), a guest in room 2046, Wang Jingwen (Faye Wong), the manager's eldest daughter, and a woman he once loved in Singapore, a gambler (Gong Li). Inside this room, Chow writes various novels. One of them is the science fiction novel ` `2046 ,'' in which a man and a woman seeking love aim for an unknown land, 2046 . The other is ``2047,'' in which a Japanese man, Taku, rides a train leaving 2046 and falls in love with an android, WJW1967 (Faye Wong), on the train. "2047"). Two novels about Hong Kong in 1966 and 2046. Kar-wai tells a more complex story than ``In the Mood for Love'' with a dual structure that mixes truth and fiction. This is because, while 2046 is set in the 1960s, like In the Mood for Love, it clearly focuses on the period after Hong Kong's handover in 1997. Also, like the previous film, it has political themes, but in a sense, it is also a purer ``romance movie'' than the previous one.
