Original French film ``Blue Requiem''

The starting point for this film is the film noir-style French film ``Blue Requiem'' (2004, directed by Nicolas Boukriev). Although it is not well known in Japan, it was a huge hit in its home country. Director Ritchie has been thinking about remaking this movie since he saw it 10 years ago. "After seeing this movie, I came up with the idea of making it into a movie. We were always talking about the project, but eventually I decided to actually move forward with making it into a movie. Then, I approached Jason, We decided to make it together.” (From an interview with Dave Griffiths of “Goodbaduglyshow” on April 28, 2021)

This French film is set in the cash truck company Vigilante. Alex, a middle-aged man, joins them as a new security guard. A somewhat mysterious man, he locks himself in a room on the north side of the hotel after work and tells the maid that she doesn't have to do any cleaning.

The reason why he joined this company is gradually revealed, and it turns out that he joined the company to find out the secrets related to his only son's case, just like the main character H, played by Jason in "Wrath of Man". However, he is not as good at shooting as H (actually), and when he holds a gun while transporting cash, he seems somewhat excited and restless. Her character is completely different from the calm and collected H.

The background of the incident surrounding his son is similar to H's, but while H's son is already a young man, Alex's son is still an innocent boy. The child is really cute, and the setting conveys the gravity of the tragedy in a real way.

There will also be episodes that are not available in the American version. Alex locks himself in a hotel room and investigates the backgrounds of his co-workers. For him, who has little contact with people, his interactions with the maid are a small proof of his existence. Although she is unfriendly and curt, she is a single mother with a young son who reminds her of Alex's late son. Through his clumsy communication with the maid, we suddenly get a glimpse of Alex's (losing) humanity. In this area, you can feel the fine detail typical of French movies.

The setting of the main character is also different from the American version. The American version of H is no ordinary man, and his incredible background becomes clearer as the story progresses, but Alex is a former bank employee and was once an ordinary citizen living with his wife and son.

"Blue Requiem" preview

The lead actor, Albert Dupontel (" Alex " (2002), " See You in Heaven " (17)), is not as good-looking as Jason Statham, he is a plain middle-aged man, but his eyes only move. is eerie and vividly expresses the sense of anger and loneliness of a person with a hidden desire for revenge. Human deeds ooze through the occasional madness, creating memorable characters. He co-stars with Jean Dujardin, a unique person who later won an Academy Award for his role in `` The Artist '' (11). Here he plays Alex's friendly colleague.

In the French version, the story unfolds in a smaller space than in the American version, and the scenery of the streets where old cash vans run is dreary and desolate. The transportation company is set to be acquired by an American company soon. The security guards are also older, and they indulge in alcohol and yak while on the job. It is a place left behind from the center of the world. That's why this revenge story about a middle-aged man who hides his sad insanity leaves a strong impression, like a small bomb.
