“Apples” synopsis

"What's your name?" "I don't remember." A man wakes up on a bus with no memory. All I remember is that I liked apples. The man decides to participate in a recovery program called ``New Self'' for treatment. He eats apples every day and completes the various missions written on the cassette tapes that are sent to him. Ride a bike, watch a horror movie, ask a girl out at a bar... ──And record the new experience on Polaroid. One day, a man meets a woman who is also participating in the same program. They exchange words, go on dates, and become friends. As she completes her daily missions and gets used to her "new normal," a man asks her where she lives while shopping and suddenly mentions the address where she used to live. Where did the memory go? A mission to create new memories gradually unravels the man's past.

New director trained by Lanthimos and Linklater

There are a number of things that intrigue movie fans about a work they haven't seen yet, but the more you get into the core, the more you'll become interested in the staff and their backgrounds. In that sense, ``Apples'' can be said to be a movie full of ``information'' that stimulates movie lovers' desire to watch.

This Greek-Polish-Slovenian co-production is directed and co-written by Christos Niku, who is making his feature debut. That alone probably won't impress many people, but when you hear that he was an assistant director on set for directors Yorgos Lanthimos and Richard Linklater, your heart will suddenly be excited. Specifically, it is said that " The Maiden in the Cage " (2009) and " Before Midnight " (2013) were produced, but it would be amazing if someone who had experience on the set of these two films made his feature-length debut with an original script. I have a delusion that this is a movie with a strong sense of authorship.

What further stirs interest is the presence of Cate Blanchett. When "Apples and Apples" (2020) was screened at the 77th Venice International Film Festival, Blanchett, who was serving as the head of the competition jury, came across this film and was selected as an executive director. He wanted to participate as a producer. This is for works that have already been completed.

“Apples” preview

This very rare episode also heightens our expectations of how great the work will be, and the sequel is also impressive. Blanchett fell in love with Niku's talent and chose him to direct and write the new film "Apples, " which she is producing. ). The production company is Dirty Films, founded by Blanchett, who also produced `` Carol '' (15). The lead role will be played by Carrie Mulligan, who also produced the film `` Promising Young Woman '' (2020).

A sense of speed with which he rose to this position in his second full-length work. This also shows the talent of the director. Blanchett is active in the production industry, in addition to series works and podcast programs such as ``Mrs. America: Women Who Challenged the Times'' (20). Also, at the aforementioned 77th Venice International Film Festival, director Chloe Zhao's `` Nomadland '' won the Golden Lion, and director Kiyoshi Kurosawa of `` The Spy's Wife '' won the Silver Lion (best director). ``Apples'' can be said to be a work that meets Blanchett's eye for exposure to talent from various countries.

This is a film that will get you excited even before you watch it, but its core content is also a quiet masterpiece that rivals these "heroic stories." Both the story structure and screen structure are restrained yet sophisticated, and the content is of a high level that is by no means condensed into small pieces. In the next section, we will talk about the details of this film, along with director Christos Niku's previous works.
